UPDATED 4/24/20, 7:38 AM (PT) --
Two hundred fifty-five players see their futures changed during a three-day span. That sounds monumental, and it should. Not only in the first round, but in the subsequent rounds was that number of football players heard their names called during the 2020 NFL Draft.
Due to safety concerns surrounding COVID-19, this year's Draft is conducted virtually rather than the in-person event which is traditional of the NFL's three-day event. The Draft was originally scheduled to take place in Las Vegas, Nevada, the new home of the Raiders. Event surroundings were set to go but the league, citing safety concerns, opted to keep the dates and announce the selections online. Individual teams will have command centers, most locally, where they will still be able to make their selections and work the phones in regard to possible trades.
The 2021 Draft is scheduled to take place in Cleveland, Ohio, but 2022 was open until the NFL announced that Las Vegas would claim that opportunity in lieu of this season.
The Draft is broadcast all three days on ABC, ESPN, NFL Network, ESPN Deportes and ESPN Radio. The schedule breakdown of the Draft is as follows (all times are pacific time):
Round 1 - Thursday, April 23, from 5 to 8:30 p.m. ET
Rounds 2-3 - Friday, April 24, from 4 to 8:30 p.m. ET
Rounds 4-7 - Saturday, April 25, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. ET
There are 10 minutes between selections for round 1, seven minutes for round 2, five minutes for rounds 3 through 6, and four minutes for round 7.
Coaches, executives and scouts found ways to be creative when it comes to their draft command centers. Washington Redskins coach Ron Rivera said he took over his daughter's workstation. Cleveland Browns coach Kevin Stefanski, formerly the offensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings, is in Minnesota since because his wife and children have not yet made the move to Cleveland. Others opted for local surroundings, such as the the New Orleans Saints, who set up their draft command center at a local brewery which is closed due to state order.
The league has video equipment set up at the homes (or draft viewing locations) of 58 of the top prospects projected to go in the first and higher rounds. UPDATED: LSU quarterback Joe Burrow, widely projected to be the first pick, was selected in that spot by the Cincinnati Bengals. Also widely predicted, Ohio St. defensive end Chase Young went second to the Washington Redskins. After that, many mock drafts seem to skew in different directions.
The final pick, a.k.a. "Mr. Irrelevant," continues this year, also in virtual format. That was the 255th and final selection made by the New York Giants.
LSU QB Joe Burrow taken first overall selection by the Bengals.
The following is the 2020 Draft order for all seven rounds. Selections will be updated regularly during the Draft. Each line begins with the numbered selection in that round, followed by the overall numbered selection, followed by the team with that selection. Trades and compensatory picks have been noted. Our NFL Analyst spiderfan will provide analysis of several key selections soon after they are made. The analysis will appear in the comments section of this thread.
