The following is the complete schedule for the restart of the 2020 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the NHL was one of several professional sports leagues that screeched to a halt in March. On July 13th, the league announced its plans for finishing 2019-20 season and crowning a Stanley Cup Champion.
Much like the NBA, the NHL is doing a Bubble City format in two Canadian locations - Edmonton, Alberta and Toronto, Ontario. The Eastern Conference playoffs will take place in Toronto, while the Western Conference playoffs will take place in Edmonton. Both Complexes will serve as Bubble Cities to try and prevent/contain the outbreak of COVID-19 among NHL players, coaches, and staff. The Edmonton site will also serve as the site of the Eastern & Western Conference Finals, as well as the Stanley Cup Final.
The tournament is scheduled to begin August 1st with the Stanley Cup Qualifiers, which will include 16 teams playing eight best-of-5 series and a round-robin among the top four teams in each conference to determine seeds for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
24 of the 31 NHL teams will partake in the playoffs, an increase of 8 eight teams (4 per conference).
According to the NHL, the games in the eight best-of-5 series in the qualifiers will be played with playoff overtime rules. The round-robin games will be played with regular-season overtime and shootout rules with ties in the standings broken by regular-season points percentage.
After the qualifiers, the conference-based playoffs will continue in the two hub cities. Each of the winners of the best-of-5 series will advance to play one of the round-robin teams in the first round. All remaining series will be best-of-7 and will be determined by seeding, not by a set bracket.
All Stanley Cup Playoff games will be aired on the NBC family of networks, including NBC, NBCSN, and USA Network. All games are listed in the Pacific timezone (PST) and are subject to change. Final scores will be updated shortly after the completion of the games.
