BARNSTORMERS OVERVIEW
Iowa has emerged as one of the IFL's powerhouses over the past few seasons. The Barnstormers won the United Bowl in 2018 by defeating the Storm, 42-38. It was the first title in their indoor football history, even dating back to their Arena Football League and af2 days. They fell to the Storm in the 2019 United Bowl, but will seek to reclaim their crown in 2021. Dixie Wooten has moved on to the Tucson Sugar Skulls, but the Barnstormers have replaced him with veteran coach Les Moss, formerly of the AFL and National Arena League's Jacksonville Sharks. Moss brings a championship pedigree to the Barnstormers. After flirting with the Sugar Skulls in 2020, Daquan Neal is back with the Barnstormers this season. Neal won the IFL Most Valuable Player award in 2019, as well as the SCtoC Golden Helmet Award for Offensive Player of the Year. Wide receiver Connor Hollenbeck is the incumbent leader in the receiving corps, and the team added veteran Brandynn Clark via free agency. In a bit of a coup, the Barnstormers signed twin brothers Rob Brown and Robert Brown at receiver and defensive back, respectively. Also look for cornerback Jeremy Golston and lineman Tony Winslow to make an impact on defense.
STORM OVERVIEW
If there is an iconic team in the IFL, the Storm are it. In the current era, they have reached an entry to the past 10 United Bowls. The kicker here is that they have won seven of those., including six straight from 2011 to 2016 This is a team which is always in the conversation in the playoff race. The Storm blew into Phoenix in the 2019 United Bowl and held off the Arizona Rattlers to gain the title, yet again. As successful as Iowa's Les Moss has been over his career, he could find his match in the Storm's Kurtiss Riggs. This game could come down to a chess match between the two. Veteran quarterback Lorenzo Brown is back at the helm of the Storm. He's a dual threat quarterback with an excellent arm and instinct for scrambling. Brown has been at the helm of those three United Bowl wins for the Storm, and Will want a fourth. Interestingly, the Storm also signed Tommy Armstrong, Jr. to back up Brown. Armstrong led the Nebraska Danger to IFL playoffs in 2019. Damian Ford and Damond Powell, Jr. seem to be the leading receivers for the group. Trey Wafford and Jermaine Robinson are on hand to take care of the secondary. Both are veterans and help lead a young, but talented group.
IFL Hall of Fame
During halftime, four new members will be inducted into the Hall of Fame. They are: Former IFL and NFL (Buffalo Bills) running back Fred Jackson; Former player and current Sioux Falls Storm head coach Kurtiss Riggs; two-time United Bowl Championship head coach and once Coach of the Year Heron O'Neal; and the late John Pettit, for his contributions to the indoor game and eventually bringing the Iowa Barnstormers over to the IFL, and winning the 2018 United Bowl.
Clockwise from top left: Fred Jackson, Kurtiss Riggs, John Pettit, Heron O'Neal.
FRED JACKSON
Played for the Sioux City Bandits and for the Buffalo Bills of the NFL, leading them in rushing for four seasons. He amassed over 5,000 rushing yards with the Bills. Jackson: "My journey to the NFL was truly a unique one. Some of my fondest memories of playing football were in the IFL. I was able to learn a lot about the speed of the game. It is an absolute honor to be inducted into the IFL Hall of Fame."
KURTISS RIGGS
The current head coach of the Storm has had a lasting legacy on indoor football, including guiding the Storm to 10 straight United Bowl appearances, winning seven of those. Riggs: "This is an accomplishment I never envisioned. But, is an award that really makes me think back to all the great players and coaches that I have had the opportunity to work with and coach. I am very thankful for the tremendous owners that have been willing to take on the indoor game and own a team in the IFL and Sioux Falls. Thank you to my family for their support and being a part of things year in and year out. Thank you to the fans, players, coaches, sponsors, staff, and families that have contributed to the Storm tradition of success."
HERON O'NEAL
The awarded coach led the Billings Outlaws to the first two United Bowl victories ever, in 2009 and 2010. He coached several other teams and is now at the helm of the Salina Liberty of Champions Indoor Football. Heron: "I firmly believe that during any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear is that moment when he has worked his heart out for a good cause and stands exhausted on the field of battle,” O’Neal said. “In the years of coaching in the IFL, I battled against some great coaches and coached some great men and without them I wouldn't be who I am today and I wouldn't be here accepting this nomination. I thank them and all who believed in me."
JOHN PETTIT
In 2008, he brought the Barnstormers back to Des Moines and, eventually from the Arena Football League to the IFL after the 2014 season. As co-owner and general manager, he Helped lead the Barnstormers to the 2018 United Bowl championship. Mr. Pettit passed away in December 2020. His daughter, Juli Pettit, was named the team's general manager on March 3, 2021. Juli Pettit on replacing her father: "There is a giant hole that is impossible to fill within the Barnstormers organization. I feel honored to be trusted to take on this title and I have every intention of continuing to run the team with the same integrity as my dad. My dad taught me everything I know and I am one of very few who can honestly say I learned from the best."
