Rattlers 51, Wranglers 20
5/16/21 --
PRESCOTT VALLEY, AZ - The Arizona Rattlers gave the Northern Arizona Wranglers a rude introduction to the IFL.
Arizona stormed out to a 21-0 first-quarter lead en route to a 51-20 win over Northern Arizona in the Wranglers' first-ever Indoor Football League contest tonight at the Findlay Toyota Center.
The Rattlers, 2017's IFL champion, start off their season with a 1-0 record, while the Wranglers fall to 0-1 on the early season. It was both teams' season debuts in week four of the 2021 season. The teams, just about 90 miles apart, will meet one other time this season when the Wranglers visit the Rattlers on July 10.
Drew Powell's short touchdown run put the Rattlers on the board early in the opening quarter, and added to that on a one-yard run from rookie Nick LaSane with 6:56 left in the quarter. Jamal Miles' score with 14 seconds left put the Rattlers up 21-0 through the first quarter.
The Wranglers scored their first touchdown in franchise history when Verlon Reed, Jr. found Marquian Johnson for a touchdown strike three minutes into the second quarter. However, the Rattlers came right back on a touchdown pass from Powell to Jamal Miles not quite two minutes later. On the next Wranglers' series, the Rattlers' Chris McAllister sacked Reed in the end zone for a safety which put Arizona up 30-7 midway through the quarter. They added to that four minutes later on a two-yard run from LaSane with 3:47 left in the first half. A six-yard run from Powell with 12 seconds remaining gave the Rattlers a 44-7 halftime lead.
Caden Walters replaced Reed in the second half, as Reed appeared to have a sort of undisclosed rib injury. The Wranglers scored on their first drive of the second half on a 21-yard run with 9:19 left on the clock. The Rattlers countered with a three-yard run from LaSane and held a 51-14 lead at the end of three.
The only score of the fourth quarter came from the Wranglers in the form of a Walters' three-yard pass to Terrence Bynum. That provided the final margin of 51-20.
Despite the slow start, the Wranglers outscored the Rattlers in the second half, 13-7. LaSane had himself a first game as a rookie with three touchdown runs for the Rattlers. Walters had marginally better success than Reed, tossing for a touchdown and rushing for another. Rattlers' kicker Ernesto Lacayo was perfect on all seven of his extra point attempts.
The Wranglers are back in action on May 22 when they visit the Bismarck Bucks for a 4:05 p.m. kickoff. The Rattlers will travel to Sioux Falls to meet the Storm on May 22 at 5:05 p.m. All times listed are pacific daylight time. Click for the SCtoC 2021 Indoor Football League schedule.
