Breakdown
SUGAR SKULLS
Tucson has been itching to get back on the field since 2019 when they were bounced from the playoffs in the first round, 50-47, by the Sioux Falls Storm. It will be 698 days before the Sugar Skulls will take the field since the 2020 season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. There is a new sheriff in town as the team moved on from Marcus Coleman and replaced him with the Iowa Barnstormers' Dixie Wooten. With the Barnstormers, Wooten compiled a 36-8 overall record while leading the team to a 2018 United Bowl win. He also was named the IFL Head Coach of the Year in both 2017 and 2018. After the Quad City Steamwheelers went dormant for this season, quarterback E.J. Hilliard signed with the Sugar Skulls. Hilliard was among the top passers in the league in 2019. Mike Jones is as solid of a rusher that there is in the IFL. Ryan Balentine, Jazeric Peterson, Kent Shelby II and Sheldon Augustine are a formidable four-receiver corps against any defense in the league. Cam Gaddis, Chris Martin and B.J. Butler will lead the Sugar Skulls' defense.
BLIZZARD
As of this week, Green Bay will be the only IFL team to play five games (four at home). The Blizzard have started off the season with mixed results. Their two wins have come over the Massachusetts Pirates and Louisville Xtreme, while both losses came at the hands of the Bismarck Bucks. Last week's loss at Bismarck has to be frustrating given that the Blizzard led by a point with nine minutes to play before the Blizzard scored on a kickoff return and a fumble recovery returned for a touchdown. The Bucks held them off for the 58-46 win. Damion May has started the past three games for the Blizzard, completing 49 percent of his passes to go along with seven touchdowns and no picks. He also has rushed for 108 yards. Kerrion Moore's has 101 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Green Bay's offense features a four-headed monster at receiver, led by Kezlow Smith's 88 receiving yards (two touchdowns) and Eric Thomas, Jr.'s four touchdowns. Momodou Mbye has 27 total tackles, and Corey Turner comes in with 24. Mason Gray leads the league with three interceptions.
