Fighters 58, Gladiators 57
6/5/21 --
FRISCO, TX - Bryce Crawford's 32-yard field goal as time expired capped a wild fourth quarter to keep the Frisco Fighters undefeated. The Fighters' 58-57 win over the Duke City Gladiators tonight at Comercia Center.
Frisco improves to a league-best 3-0 with the win and remain the only undefeated team in the Indoor Football League through week seven. Duke City falls to 1-2 on the year.
The teams were tied 27-27 at halftime and 41-41 after three quarters. The Fighters went up by a touchdown on Demarcus Felton's one-yard run with 14:17 left in the fourth. The Gladiators responded with a 14-yard pass from Nate Davis to Dello Davis. James Naehu's extra point attempt was blocked leaving the Fighters with a one-point advantage. The Fighters extended their lead to eight points with just over four minutes remaining when Jonathan Bane hit Lance Evans for a 12-yard touchdown. A five-yard touchdown from Nate Davis to Dello Davis brought the Gladiators closer and when the duo hooked up for the two-point conversion the game was tied at 55 apiece with 47 seconds left.
The Gladiators then called on Naehu to attempt the deuce and he delivered. The deuce rule, adopted by the IFL prior to this season, awards two points to the kicking team when the kickoff goes through the uprights. Naehu's kick put the Gladiators up 57-55 with 47 seconds left. That set up the Fighters' final drive of the game of eight plays and 28 yards, capped by Crawford's game winner.
Fricso held an edge in total offense, 286 yards to 194 with the major difference coming in the rushing game, 113 yards to nine. Each team was penalized six times; 60 yards for the Gladiators and 33 yards for the Fighters.
Bane finished 15 of 24 for 192 yards and four touchdowns; while Felton had 82 yards off 12 carries with four trips to the end zone. Lance Evans led Frisco with four catches for 64 yards and two touchdowns. Khalil Williams paced the Fighters with six tackles.
Nate Davis went 16 of 29 for 191 yards and seven touchdowns. Dello Davis had game highs of 10 receptions, 136 yards and six receiving touchdowns. Karrion Darrington finished with eight tackles, while Javian Williams had six tackles and two sacks for the Duke City defense.
The Fighters will visit the Massachusetts Pirates on June 12 at 4:05 p.m. The Gladiators are back in action on June 12 when they head to Prescott Valley to take on the Northern Arizona Wranglers. Kickoff in that one is set for 6:05 p.m. All times listed are pacific daylight time. Click for the SCtoC 2021 Indoor Football League schedule.
