Breakdown
SUGAR SKULLS
The Sugar Skulls may be reeling after being held to just 13 points in a home loss to the Iowa Barnstormers last week. Their coach, Dixie Wooten was making his first appearance against his former team and things didn't work out so well. Tucson finds itself in the position of an early, essentially, must-win scenario. These teams met four times in 2019 with the Rattlers winning all four. Demry Croft has been the starter at quarterback for the Sugar Skulls, but veteran E.J. Hilliard could get the start should Wooten choose to make a change. Hilliard was the league's top passer in 2019 while with the Quad City Steamwheelers. Both could see some time in this game. Mike Jones led all running backs in rushing last season and is always a threat on the ground and as a receiver out the backfield. Ryan Balentine is the featured receiver, along with Sheldon Augustine and Kent Shelby II. Jajuan Harley leads the team in tackles, Michael Minter had a pair of picks and Cory Butler-Byrd is the player to watch in the defensive secondary.
RATTLERS
Arizona nearly had a perfect season in 2019, until their 56-53 loss at home to the Sioux Falls Storm. The Rattlers lost to the Storm earlier this season, and now go against their in-state rival the Sugar Skulls. Tucson came the closest to defeating Arizona last season, but fell a point short as the Rattlers claimed the 50-49 win in overtime. This is the first meeting between the teams since that game which will take place two years and four days ago. Drew Powell, who led the Iowa Barnstormers to a United Bowl championship in 2018, is at the helm for the second season with the Rattlers. Powell is a threat both through the air and on the ground. He leads the team in yardage in both categories. Nick LeSane and Darrell Monroe are the ground gainers, while Jarrod Harrington and Jamal Miles are the receivers to watch on offense. Both are potential game breakers. Dillon Winfrey, Devin Cockrell, Tyrell Pearson and Treyvon Williams are the big names on defense and will seek to cause problems for the Sugar Skulls offense.
