Bucks 50, Blizzard 29
6/18/21 --
GREEN BAY, WI - Richard Stammetti, making just his second start of the season, threw six touchdown passes as the Bismarck Bucks overtook the Green Bay Blizzard tonight, 50-29, at the Resch Center.
Bismarck has now won all three match ups over Green Bay this season, including both games in Titletown. The Bucks, who went just 2-12 in 2019, now stand at 5-3 on the season, of which they are halfway through their schedule. The Bucks have outscored their opponents 103-51 over the past two games.
Green Bay was looking to avenge their week 1 and week 4 losses to the Bucks, but they got off to a slow start and never were able to recover as they fell to 3-4 on the season. The teams play once more this season, on July 30 at Bismarck.
The Blizzard received the opening kickoff, but a hard hit caused Treyvon Saunders caused him to cough up the ball right into the hands of the Bucks' Deion Carter who returned it to the Green Bay 16. The Bucks scored on a nine-yard pass from Richard Stammetti to Justin Rankin. The Blizzard came right back with Damion May's nine-yard touchdown to Saunders. The Bucks went up 14-7 with Mike Carrigan's three-yard rush up the middle. That score held through the end of the opening quarter.
Green Bay pulled to within 14-10 when Henry Nell kicked a 23 yard field goal early in the second quarter. Nell played in his second-to-last game with the Blizzard, as he was signed by the Canadian Football League's Saskatchewan Roughriders. Raheem Harvey's four-yard touchdown from Stammetti put the Bucks up by 10. The Bucks increased that lead to 27-10 with 6.3 seconds remaining in the half with a three-yard pass from Stammetti to Malik Brown. The Bucks had Nell attempt a 60-yard field goal as time expired in the half. The kick had the length, but was wide to the left.
The second half started in the same manner as the first, but this time it was the Bucks fumbling the ball which was recovered by Momodu Mbye. However the Blizzard turned it over on downs. Bismarck scored on the next drive on Stammetti's 20-yard bomb to J.T. Stokes. But, the Blizzard came right back with a 16-yard strile from May to Keshaun Taylor. They attempted the extra point but, due to a bad snap, holder Bakari Triggs was forced to make an errant throw which was intercepted by Zuriel Hendrick and returned 52 yards for a two-point conversion for the Bucks. Bismarck added to their lead as Stammetti hit Rankin for an eight-yard touchdown. The Bucks led 43-16 after three quarters.
After the Blizzard turned it over on downs, the Bucks scored on a 17-yard touchdown pass from Stammetti to Stokes. The Blizzard put in rookie quarterback Brook Bolles to replace May. Bolles responded with a 33-yard touchdown bomb to Taylor, but Nell's point after attempt hit the right upright. Triggs intercepted Stammetti to give the Blizzard the ball back. On the first play of the drive, Bolles hit a wide open Eric Thomas, Jr. for 21 yards to draw Green Bay to within 50-29 with just under three minutes left in regulation.
Stammetti finished with six scoring passes with two of those going to Stokes. Bolles and May each threw two touchdown passes; two of those combined went to Taylor.
The Wranglers will host the Tucson Sugar Skulls on June 26 at 5 p.m. in the IFL Game of the Week on the Stadium Network. The Shock will visit the Arizona Rattlers on June 26 for a 6:05 p.m. kickoff. All times listed are pacific daylight time. Click for the SCtoC 2021 Indoor Football League schedule.
