Green Bay Blizzard 48, Iowa Barnstormers 44
6/25/21 --
GREEN BAY, WI - The Green Bay Blizzard took advantage of three defensive interceptions to push away the Iowa Barnstormers tonight, 48-44, at the Resch Center.
The game was largely a back-and-forth, but the Blizzard came out on top to move to 4-4 on the season while the Barnstormers fell to 4-3. It was the first win for the Blizzard over the Barnstormers in over five years; a 73-72 win on April 24, 2016 at Green Bay.
After Tony Jones' recovery of Brook Bolles' fumble on the Blizzard's opening drive, the Barnstormers scored on a 17-yard pass from Daquan Neal to Carrington Thompson, Sr. to go up 7-0. The Blizzard came right back with Bolles scoring on a one-yard rush off the left guard. Green Bay's Momodu Mbye intercepted Neal and returned the pick around the left side 24 yards for the score. Neal's three-yard run at the end of the opening quarter to tie the game at 13-13 on the last play of the first quarter. The Barnstormers added the extra point to take a one-point lead.
Bolles 32-yard bomb to Keshaun Taylor put the Blizzard back up early in the fourth. After Corey Turner's interception of a Neal pass, they went up 27-14 with a nine-yard run from Bolles. Neal hit Thompson for an eight-yard score to cut into the lead. Bolles then fired a 35-yard bomb to Taylor to go up 34-21. Iowa countered with a one-yard run from Covaliu in the final minutes. The Blizzard tried to score at the end of the first half, but Jeff Budzien's 27-yard field goal try was blocked by the Barnstormers. The Blizzard led 34-28 at intermission.
The teams got off to slow starts in the third quarter, with the only score coming on a Gabriel Rui 43-yard field goal late in the quarter to make the score 34-31 in favor of the Blizzard.
Green Bay went back up by six with a 22-yard field goal from Budzien early in the fourth, only to see Iowa take a one-point lead at 38-37. The Blizzard came right back on Kerrion Moore's eight-yard run. That, coupled with Bolles' run for the two-point conversion, put the Blizzard up 45-38. Neal was intercepted by Malik Reaves, giving the ball back to Green Bay. They capitalized with a 17-yard field goal from Budzien and they were up 48-38 with 58.4 seconds to go. The Barnstormers scored on a one-yard run from Covaliu, but the two-point conversion failed. The Barnstormers recovered a fumble by the Blizzard, but the clock ran out before they were able to recapture the lead.
Bolles went four of five and tossed two touchdowns in last week's Blizzard loss to the Bismarck Bucks. He was making his first-ever start. Budzien took the place of Green Bay kicker Hendy Nell, who was signed by the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League. Nell is currently in a 14-day quarantine because of Canadian travel guidelines due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Bolles passed for 123 yards with a pair of touchdowns and no interceptions. He also rushed for 32 yards with a pair of touchdowns. Taylor had 67 yards receiving with both of his catches going for touchdowns. Recently signed Keyondre Craig caught five passes for 47 yards> Reaves led the team with eight tackles to go along with his interception.
Neal passed for 213 yards with three scores, but tossed those three interceptions. Thompson had five catches for 98 yards and two scores. Person, making his debut with the Barnstormers, finished with four grabs for 64 yards and a touchdown. Jones led the team with eight tackles.
