FRISCO, TX - And then there were none.
Josh Gable's 27-yard field goal as time expired lifted the Massachusetts Pirates to a 38-37 win on the road over the Fighters. Massachusetts issued Frisco its first loss of the season. The Fighters were the last undefeated team remaining in the Indoor Football League heading into the game. The Pirates improve to 5-3 on the season, while the Fighters fall to 5-1.
The Fighters took The first game between the teams; 40-33 on June 12 at Worchester, Massachusetts.
Frisco's Sir'Veil Ford intercepted Massachusetts' Alejandro Bennifield on the Pirates' opening drive. The Pirates returned the favor when Harlan Miller intercepted the Fighters' Jonathan Bane The Pirates scored on the next play; a seven-yard run up the middle from Martez Carter. After Marques Rodgers' kickoff return gave the Fighters the ball inside their five yard line, Damarcus Felton tied the game two plays later with a one-yard plunge. Massachusetts took a 14-7 lead late in the opening quarter.
Massachusetts overcame eight unsportsmanlike and personal foul penalties in the game -- six alone in the first quarter. Two of those were against Pirates defensive lineman J.D. Griggs, who was ejected from the game die to the infractions.
The Fighters tied the game on Rodgers' five-yard run around the right side. After a missed long Massachusetts field goal, the Pirates drove down and scored on a 10-yard run from Jerrod Heard. The Pirates took a one-yard lead with 47 left in the second quarter. Kristov Martinez's field goal as time expired put the Fighters up at the half, 23-21.
The teams traded touchdowns in the first quarter. Demarcus Felton broke out on a 44-yard run for the Fighters to put them up 30-21 early in the third quarter. Laquviate Gonzalez responed with a scoring run before Felton scored once again midway through the third on a one-yard run. The Pirates pulled to within 37-35 with 5:34 left in the quarter on Bennifield's 18-yard pass to Owens.
Neither team scores for more than 20 minutes as the teams traded missed field goals, and there was an interception from Alonzo Bennifield into the arms of Frisco's Alonzo Turner, and the Fighters turned it over on downs twice. That opened up Gable's game winner to seal the deal.
Felton Ran for three touchdowns for the Fighters, while Bennifield threw for a pair of touchdowns for the Pirates.
