OVERVIEW
The Seattle Kraken are a professional ice hockey expansion team based out of Seattle, Washington. Approved as an expansion team on December 4, 2018, the team was formally accepted as the 32nd franchise of the National Hockey League (NHL).
The Kraken are owned by Seattle Hockey Partners, consisting of TPG Capital founder David Bonderman, Hollywood Film and TV producer Jerry Bruckheimer, and Sports Executive Tod Lieweke. The Kraken are run by Hall of Fame General Manager Ron Francis and coached by former Philadelphia Flyers head coach Dave Hakstol.
Seattle will be members of the Pacific Division in the Western Conference, and will call the newly redeveloped Climate Pledge Arena (formerly KeyArena) as home. They are the 32nd NHL franchise, following in the footsteps of the Vegas Golden Knights, who began play in the 2017-2018 season.
As is the case with all new expansion franchise in professional sports, the Kraken will select players for the team's first ever roster in the 2021 NHL Expansion Draft. Seattle must select 1 player from each existing NHL club (excluding Vegas) with the parameters of selecting 14 forwards, 9 defensemen and 3 goaltenders. The 30 NHL teams must subit to the league their list of protected players, and expose at least 2 forwards and 1 defenseman under contract for the 2021-22 season and played at least 27 games in the 2020-21 season, or more than 54 games in the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons combined. Teams must also expose a goaltender under contract for the 2021-22 seaon or are a restricted free agent in 2021. Players who made their debuts with teams in 2019-20 or 2020-21 are not eligible to be selected and need not be protected.
Heading into the expansion draft, the Kraken have one player under contract: 21-year-old centre Luke Henman, who agreed to a three-year, entry level contract with the Kraken on May 12th, 2021. Originally selected 96th overall in the 2018 NHL draft by the Carolina Hurricanes, Henman did not come to a contract agreement, thus making him a free agent. A native of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Henman played his junior hockey career as a member of the Blainsville-Boisbriand Armada of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL).
The 2021 NHL Expansion Draft will occur July 21st at Gas Works Park in Seattle at 5 p.m. (PST) on ESPN2. The Expansion Draft special will be hosted by ESPN College Football Lead Play by Play Chris Fowler, who will be joined by former NHL Players Dominic Moore and Kevin Weekes.
SCtoC will be updating this thread with a brief profile on each member selected by the Kraken, and update the initial thread with the roster as selections are revealed.
