Rattlers 55, Sugar Skulls 28

PHOENIX, AZ - Let's make it seven out of seven.
The Arizona Rattlers had a nice day at the office as they dispatched the Tucson Sugar Skulls, 55-28, tonight at Footprint Center. The win completes the season sweep over the Sugar Skulls, 3-0. Dating back to Tucson's inaugural 2019 season, the Rattlers have won all seven matchups between the teams. Tonight's result was the lucky seven for the Rattlers.
Arizona, which has made the playoffs in each of its four seasons in the Indoor Football League, furthered its quest for the number one seed in the playoffs with just a pair of games to go. regardless of positioning, the Rattlers will host a First Round playoff game on Sunday, August 29 against an opponent to be determined. The Rattlers can solidify the top seed if they win their two remaining games. However, the Frisco Fighters and Massachusetts Pirates are nipping at their heels, a half game back in the standings. There are scenarios in which the Rattlers could finish in positions one through three. The Rattlers host the Fighters in the season finale on August 28. The Rattlers are now 10-2 on the season.
Tucson, which found its playoff hopes dwindle a bit, drop to 4-8 on the season. While the Sugar Skulls are not out of it, they will need to win and get some other help to punch a ticket to the postseason.

Tucson scored on its opening drive of the game on a four-yard run. Arizona struck right back with a nine-yard scoring pass from Drew Powell to Jarrod Harrington. The score was knotted at 7-7 at the end of one.
Darrell Monroe's nine-yard touchdown pass from Powell put the Rattlers up by a touchdown with 10:41 left in the second quarter and they added to the lead with a 58-yard field goal return from Harrington. The Sugar Skulls scored, but Monroe rushed in for a five-yard score with 26 seconds left in the first half to make the score 27-14, which lasted through halftime.
In the third, Powell found Jeremiah Harris for a five-yard touchdown and later in the quarter, a 28-yard scoring run from Powell made the score 41-21.
Ryan Balentine caught a two-yard touchdown from Demry Croft to make it 41-28, but the Rattlers came right back with a seven yard touchdown from Powell to Harrington. Dillon Winfrey returned his interception of Croft 35-yards for a score which accounted for the final margin of 55-28.
Winfrey had three interceptions on the day. Croft, who started nine games for the Sugar Skulls, was inserted back into the lineup after Cory Murphy suffered was was reported to be a shoulder injury in the second quarter.
The Rattlers will visit the Spokane Shock on August 13 with kickoff scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The Sugar Skulls are at home as they face the Duke City Gladiators at 6:05 p.m. All times listed are pacific daylight time. Click for the complete SCtoC 2021 Indoor Football League schedule.
