Rattlers 30, Shock 20
8/13/21 --
SPOKANE, WA - The Spokane Shock's playoff fate is still up in the air. The Shock have earned a playoff spot, but they will sit for as many as nine days as they await their opponent and location.
Spokane came into week 17 of the season at 6-5 with the opportunity to clinch the fourth seed and a First Round bye in the playoffs. Despite having a 10-3 lead in the first quarter, the Shock were unable to get much offense going from that point as they fell at home tonight to the Arizona Rattlers, 30-20, at Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena.
The Shock finish their regular season at 6-6, while the Rattlers improve to 11-2 and have control over their own playoff position. If they defeat the Frisco Fighters at home next week, they will be the top seed. If they lose to the Fighters, they could fall as low as the third seed depending on other results around the league.
The Rattlers won the first meeting between the teams, 56-35, at Phoenix on June 25.
The Shock settled for a 40-yard Sawyer Petre field goal on their opening drive of the game. The Rattlers began their first drive, but Drew Powell's throw on third down was tipped and intercepted by the Shock's Caleb Bailey. Spokane capitalized on the turnover with a four-yard run from quarterback Marcus McDade midway through the opening quarter. The Rattlers got on the board with a 25-yard field goal from Ernesto Lacayo with 3:49 left in the quarter. The Shock led 10-3 after one.
Petre's 20-yard field goal put the Shock up by 10 early in the second quarter. Powell's two-yard run pulled the Rattlers to within a field goal midway through the quarter. the With the Shock driving, McDade was intercepted by Dillon Winfrey, giving the Rattlers the ball back. It was Winfrey's seventh interception on the season. The Rattlers came right back with a touchdown pass from Powell to Jarrod Harrington. After Lacayo's missed field goal try, Spokane had one more chance with 18 seconds left, but McDade's bomb to the end zone was intercepted by Tyrell Pearson and the clock ran out to the half. The Rattlers led 17-13 at the break.
Arizona had the only score of the second half. It came on a 12-yard run from Powell. Petre tried to pull the Shock to within three, but his 26-yard attempt was blocked. The Rattlers' lead was 23-13 heading into the final quarter.
Spokane's defense held the Rattlers to a turnover on downs deep in their own territory and the offense capitalized with a two-yard run from Kamrin Solomon. On the roster as a receiver, Solomon was lined up as a running back most of the game due to injures to the Shock's backfield. Powell's three-yard run proved to be the icing on the cake to give the Rattlers the 30-20 win.
In a battle of quarterbacks, Powell rushed for three scores and threw for another. McDade rushed for a score, but threw a pair of picks; both in the first half.
This game concludes the regular season for the Shock. They were scheduled to play the Louisville Xtreme in the week 18 finale, but that game was cancelled when the Xtreme's IFL membership was terminated by the league for failure to meet their financial obligations. They will have a bye in week 18 before entering the playoffs the weekend of August 27-29. The Rattlers will face the Frisco Fighters on August 21 in the season finale at Phoenix. Kickoff is set for 6:05 p.m. All times listed are pacific daylight time. Click for the complete SCtoC 2021 Indoor Football League schedule.
