Pirates 55, Barnstormers 19
8/21/21 --
WORCHESTER, MA - Thomas Owens hauled in three touchdowns and rushed for another as the Massachusetts Pirates locked up the second seed in the Indoor Football League playoffs with a 55-19 win tonight at the DCU Center.
Massachusetts, 11-4, came in needing a win to earn the second seed. A loss would have dropped the Pirates to the third seed. The difference being that should they advance past the First Round of the playoffs, they would be guaranteed to host a game in the semifinal round. Massachusetts will host the Bismarck Bucks in the opening round on August 28 at 4:05 p.m. pacific time.
Despite the loss, Iowa still earned the fourth seed due to tiebreaker rules, though a win would have given them the same seed outright. They will host the Duke City Gladiators on August 28 at 5:05 p.m. pacific. The Barnstormers finished the season at 6-6.
This was the first-ever meeting between the Barnstormers and Pirates.
The Barnstormers struck first, on their opening drive, with a three-yard run from Elad Covaliu. The Pirates struck back with a 12-yard touchdown strike from Alejandro Bennifield to Owens. The Barnstormers took a three-point lead with Gabriel's 30-yard field goal. Rui started the season as the Pirates' kicker at the beginning of their season. Bennifield found Owens again to go up 13-10 late in the first quarter.
Santos Ramirez recovered an Iowa fumble and returned it 12 yards to extend the Pirates' lead. Iowa cut the deficit to 19-13 with a 32-yard field goal from Rui. Laquvionte Gonzalez returned the ensuing kickoff 53 yards to make the score 26-13 midway through the second quarter. Justin Stockton's three-yard run inside one minute, coupled with Ali Mourtada's deuce, gave the Pirates a 35-13 halftime lead.
Mourtada nailed a pair of field goals, of 30 and 46 yards, in the third quarter to extend the lead to 41-13. The Pirates' defense forced the Barnstormers to turn the ball over on downs twice in the quarter.
Owens scored on his third touchdown grab from Bennifield before Richard Stammetti put the Barnstormers back on the board with a scoring strike to Donovan Rasberry. Owens iced the win with a seven yard run to provide the final margin.
Bennifield went 10 of 18 141 yards with three touchdowns. Owens added 85 yards off five catches to his three touchdowns. Harlan Miller led the Pirates' defense with eight tackles, and T.J. Barnes finished with 1.5 sacks.
Neal finished nine of 26 for 86 yards, and Elad Covaliu has 12 rushes for 49 yards and a score. Rasberry led the Barnstormers in receiving with three catches for 41 yards and a touchdown. Tyrone Cromwell finished with 10 tackles and Jay Washington registered a sack.
