Blizzard 67, Blizzard 38
5/18/24 --
GREEN BAY, WI - The Green Bay Blizzard scored 29 unanswered points over the final 17 minutes en route to a 67-38 route of the first-place Frisco Fighters this afternoon at the Resch Center.
Things were tight until the 1:35 mark of the third quarter when the Blizzard went on their run. Green Bay improves to 6-2 on the season and into a tie for first place in the Eastern Conference with the Fighters. It's also the first win in five attempts against the Fighters.
This was the only meeting between the teams this season, meaning the victory could have some tiebreaker implications should the teams remain tied at the end of week 19's slate of action. The Massachusetts Pirates' loss earlier today to the Northern Arizona Wranglers drops the Pirates into third.
The game started with a bang when Frisco's Martez Carter broke free for a 30-yard touchdown scamper on the first play from scrimmage. EJ Burgess' eight-yard touchdown run on Green Bay's first drive evened the score at 7-7 with just two-and-a-half minutes into the contest. Larry Harrington, making his second straight start for the injured TJ Edwards, put the Fighters up 21-7 with a pair of touchdown runs (four and nine yards) by the end of the opening quarter.
The second quarter saw plenty of fireworks as the teams scored a combined 34 points. The Blizzard scored on the first play of the quarter on a one-yard run around the side from Burgess. After Andrew Mevis' point-after try failed, he redeemed himself with a deuce on the ensuing kickoff. With the Fighters pined at their own five, Harrington was sacked in his own end zone by Olalere Oladipo for a safety. The Blizzard followedd that up with another one-yard run from Burgess. Harrington's four-yard scamper pulled back ahead by four with under two minutes left. Green Bay quarterback Max Meylor rushed in from a yard out with nine seconds to go. Not to be undone, the Fighters tied it at 31-31 as time expired in the half with a 52-yard field goal from Bryce Crawford.
Crawford's kick at the end of the half was the longest in the IFL this season. The previous was set just a day ago by iowa's Gabriel Rui's 51 yarder set during the Barnstormers loss last night to the Quad City Steamwheelers. Interestingly, the third-longest was set in that game as well; the 49-yard game-winner from the Steamwheelers' Kyle Kaplan.
Green Bay took the lead early in the third when Meylor hit Demetrius Moore for a six-yard touchdown three minutes into the quarter. Harrington's 21-yard scramble up the middle tied the game once again. That's when the Blizzard went to work. Meylor rushed for a four-yard touchdown late in the quarter to put the Blizzard up by a touchdown. They led 45-38 at the end of three.
The fourth quarter was all Blizzard. Meylor hit Moore for a 25-yard touchdown, which was followed up by Burgess' 31-yard touchdown on the ground. Meylor added to the total with a one-yard run with 2:15 remaining. Just as he had done in the second quarter, Mevis missed the extra point attempt only to follow that up with another deuce.
Meylor completed 13 of 17 passes for 130 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. He also rushed for 36 yards and three scores. Burgess rushed 19 times for 85 yards and his four touchdowns. More ended up with six catches for 77 yards and both of Meylor's passing touchdowns, and Andre Williams hauled in five passes for 49 yards. Ravarius Rivers was all over the place on defense, where he led the team with five tackles and an interception. Lakevias Daniel added a pick of his own.
Harrington had a miserable passing day, going four of 12 for 56 yards no touchdowns and a pair of interceptions. He had a nice game on the ground, however, gaining 76 yards on 11 carries with four trips to the end zone. Carter finished with eight carries for 70 yards and a score. Devon McCoy was the only Fighter with more than one catch; he caught two passes for 27 yards. Royce See led the Frisco defense with 9.5 tackles, including three tackles for loss. Ethan Caselberry added seven tackles.
The Blizzard amassed 253 total yards to 196 for the Fighters. They had a 80-yard advantage in the passing game, while the Fighters had a 23-yard edge in the running game. Frisco was flagged nine times for 39 yards and Green Bay was penalized three times for 46 yards.
The Blizzard will visit the Iowa Barnstormers on May 24 for a 5:05 p.m. kickoff. The Fighters will visit the San Diego Strike Force on May 26 with kickoff set for 3:05 p.m. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
Both games, as well as all IFL games this season, will be streamed live on the IFL YouTube Channel and Caffeine TV IFL. SCtoC will present previews of those, and all, games this season. Those previews will be posted on the board of the home team in each game. Click for our complete IFL 2024 Schedule.
