DES MOINES, IA - The Tulsa Oilers kept their playoff hopes alive as they turned back the Iowa Barnstormers, 54-48, tonight at Wells Fargo Arena.
With the win, the Oilers move into fifth place in the Eastern Conference standings and remain a game and a half back of the fourth-place Quad City Steamwheelers. Quad City defeated the Green Bay Blizzard tonight 37-27. The top four teams from each conference will earn playoff berths. The Oilers move to 5-8 on the season, while the Barnstormers fell to 4-8 and fall to sixth in the conference.
Tulsa also completed the season sweep of the Barnstormers as it took the early season matchup, 39-31, on April 6. The Oilers also took a 3-1 lead in the overall historical series over the Barnstormers with a 2-0 mark at Des Moines.
Andre Sale completed 20 of 24 throws for 167 yards with four touchdowns and an interception, and another two rushing scores. Jarrod Ware, Jr. rushed for 52 yards and a touchdown. D'Marcus Adams caught five passes for 62 yards and two touchdowns while Alexis Rosario had seven catches for 49 yards and two touchdowns. Jordan Jones, the IFL's top tackler, had 7.5 tackles in this one. Taylor Hawkins picked off a pair of passes, and Kaytron Allen and Romon Morris had an interception each. Leon Smalls added a sack.
Daniel Smith, who began the season as the Oilers' starting quarterback, went 18 of 24 for 193 yards with five touchdowns and three picks. Robert Washington had 26 yards and a touchdown on the ground and another score through the air. Darren Wilson had seven catches for 91 yards and three touchdowns, and Keshaun Taylor and Quian Williams each had a touchdown grab. J'Von France and Malcolm Washington led the way for the Iowa defense with 6.5 tackles apiece, and Cincere Mason had an interception.
Iowa held an edge in total offense, 265 yards to 226 with an advantage of 65 yards in the passing game. Tulsa had an edge of 26 yards in the running game. The Barnstormers were penalized five times for 29 yards and the Oilers were flagged three times for 19 yards.
The Oilers will host the Green Bay Blizzard on June 29 with kickoff set for 5:05 p.m. The Barnstormers will visit the Arizona Rattlers on June 29 for a 6:05 p.m. kickoff. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
