TULSA, OK - Ed Burgess, Jr. rushed for three first half touchdowns as the Green Bay Blizzard got back in the win column with a 54-20 win tonight over the Tulsa Oilers at the BOK Center.
With the win, the Blizzard move to 11-3 and remain in a two-way tie atop the Eastern Conference standings with the Frisco Fighters. The Fighters scored on the last play on the road to top the San Antonio Gunslingers, 58-57. The Blizzard own the tiebreaker over the Fighters due to a higher conference win percentage. Both teams clinched home field advantage in the first round with their wins tonight.
The Oilers fell to 5-9 on the season and are seeing their playoff hopes slip away. The Blizzard defeated the Oilers in the teams' first meeting of the season, 42-22. Green Bay has now won all three games in the history of this series, including a 2-1 mark at Tulsa.
EJ Burgess, Jr.'s two-yard touchdown run put Green Bay up early. After getting the ball back, the Blizzard scored on another two-yard run from Burgess. Tulsa quarterback Andre Sale fumbled and recovered in his own end zone resulting in a safety for the Blizzard defense. The Blizzard went up by at least three scores when Jaylin Cagle ran in from two yards out. Green Bay led 23-0 at the end of the opening quarter.
Tulsa got on the board 30 seconds into the second when Sale connected with D'Marcus Adams for a 37-yard touchdown pass. The Blizzard came right back with a six-yard touchdown scamper from quarterback Max Meylor. Sale found Alexis Rosario for a nine-yard touchdown with just under three minutes remaining in the half. Burgess scored for the Blizzard with his third touchdown run of the game; this one of eight yards with 27 seconds left. Green Bay led 37-14 at intermission.
The Blizzard increased their lead with Meylor's nine-yard run late in the third quarter. That was the only score of the quarter by either team and left Green Bay with a 43-14 lead heading into the fourth. Sale hit Adams for a two-yard touchdown for the Oilers at the 10:12 mark of the final quarter. Skyler Perry, who relieved Meylor at quarterback, scored on a six-yard run for the Blizzard. Andrew Mevis tacked on a 40-yard field goal for Green Bay, then connected on a deuce for good measure.
Meylor finished 10 of 18 for 144 yards. He also rushed for 30 yards and a touchdown. Burgess rushed for 45 yards off nine carries to go along with his three rushing scores. Lowell Patrol caught a pair of passes for 54 yards, while Demetrius Moore caught two balls for 30 yards. Nijul Canada led the Blizzard defense with eight tackles and Rivarius Rivers had an interception.
Sale completed 14 of 24 passes for 137 yards with three touchdowns and a pick. Adams caught seven passes for 90 yards and two touchdowns. Rosario had two grabs for 22 yards and another score. Kaytron Allen had seven tackles to pace the defense. Jordan Jones, who leads the league in tackles, added five.
The Blizzard doubled up the Oilers in total offense to the tone of 246 yards to 123. They had a seven-yard edge in receiving yards, but a 116-yard advantage on the ground. Green Bay was penalized 13 times for 103 yards while the Oilers were flagged six times for 27 yards.
Both teams are on their third and final byes of the season next week. The Blizzard will visit the Jacksonville Sharks for a 4:05 p.m. The Oilers will host the Quad City Steamwheelers on July 13 with kickoff set for 5:05 p.m. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
