Dec. 4 -- Nebraska has its new head coach and Oregon St. has a new head coaching vacancy.
Beavers head coach Mike Riley has been hired as the new head coach of the Cornhuskers. The announcement was made today by Shawn Eichorst, director of athletics at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.
Riley served two tenures at Oregon St., winning a total of 93 games and 6-2 in bowl games. In all, he coached the Beavers for 14 years. The team finished this season at 5-7 overall and 2-7 in the Pac-12.
Between stints, Riley served as the head coach of the NFL's San Diego Chargers, and assistant head coach and defensive backs coach of the New Orleans Saints. During his career he has also served as head coach of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League and the San Antonio Riders of the World League of American Football.
Riley was born in Wallace, Idaho and attented Corvallis High School. As its quarterback, he led them to two straight state title games in 1969 and 1970. He played college football at the University of Alabama under legendary college football head coach Paul "Bear" Bryant.
"It is truly an honor to join the University of Nebraska family. Though we love Corvallis and Oregon State, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to coach at one of the nation's most storied football programs and I can't wait to get started. My sincere thanks to Chancellor Perlman and Shawn Eichorst for their confidence in me and I look forward to becoming a part of the Nebraska family and building upon the great history and tradition," Riley said in a statement released today.
Riley will take assume his new position immediately, but interim head coach Barney Cotton will coach Nebraska in its bowl game, which has yet to be announced.
He will be introduced formally at a press conference on Dec. 5 at 7 a.m. pacific time.
Eichorst released the following statement Thursday morning:
"There was one coach who fit all the characteristics that I was seeking to lead our tradition-rich football program. Mike Riley has a proven record of success, a sound approach to football and teaching, an understanding of the educational mission of our university and the integrity and values that we cherish at Nebraska. I have no doubt that Mike will assemble a tremendous staff and lead our student-athletes to win Big Ten titles and compete for national championships in the years ahead."
