One of the interesting things going on this training camp among people that I actually know who they are and am sure they will make the team is that Jake McDonough's going to convert to play offensive line. I wrote a little about it over on my blog, if you're interested: Wrong Way Sports. /yes, I was into Sublime in my younger days. Still like it as a blog title, though.

I really appreciate the insights. I think Jake could help us out a lot, though I am concerned once we rely on him that he might move on to an opportunity in the NFL. I understand that is the nature of the business. I just would hate to see it happen.

I think at this point he's hopefully a bridge to getting back to Max, who is out at training camp but isn't able to participate yet. He's wrapping up his career and winding it down, so it's not like the NFL's going to be calling, and hopefully he'll be able to get back in and do well. Also, the defensive line is going to be goooooood. It'll be interesting to see how the DBs do. They're mostly doing one-on-ones so Bryce has been doing a lot of that - hopefully he'll go back into the Jack spot for the season. It's frustrating watching a lot of the practices because there are guys in on 2-day tryouts that I want to see. There's a QB in there I don't know much about who doesn't get many reps, but I'm watching saying "c'mon I already know what Darron, Danny, and Kyle can do, I want to see the new guy."

Who is the new QB? Nathan Enderle? (J/K!). It would be interesting to see what comes out of any QB battle. It feels like Thomas will be there regardless so it basically comes down to who could unseat Kyle. I'm not sure about the inexperience at DB. It will be a while new unit. Bryce is best at JLB and Brandon T. is really good at MLB. The line might be good. I'm still concerned. I thought our OL got a lot better last season. I hope Max isn't out for very long. We'll see how Jake does in there. Is Collins a lock at center do you think?

Based solely on guys I know have played in the AFL before, it'd be Martinez at FB, Collins at C, McDonough at G, and McCuller at TE. If/when Max comes back then he'll be a G (no way is he ever slipping out on a screen) and McDonough may see time elsewhere. Lockheart is still around and there's a 40-year-old guy from camp who used to play in the NFL, I think. If he makes it through the first cuts I'll try to have a story on him next week.

I am fine with both lines and LBs and Rowley. I like Thomas, but Southwick would be the better backup. We lost the entire defensive backfield and that could hurt since they were pretty good last season. I just read that we got Aaron Lesue. After reading about him, I can tell you that this was the kind of veteran signing I have been hoping for and that I have not seen before. We need some strong receiving corps, and this is a good sign. What can you tell me about him?

Lesue's legit; hopefully he's fully back from his injury. I'm surprised that he came here instead of to LA; he played under Sauk for a couple years in Utah and that's where almost all his numbers come from - he was picked up by Pittsburgh when Utah folded, so it's not like there was a bad split. It's not like he's from the Northwest or anything.
Just looked up his wiki, and apparently he also plays rugby nationally and is trying to get a spot on the US Winter Olympics squad in 2018. Seems like a pretty interesting guy. Maybe I'll have to talk to him tomorrow (was supposed to have a job interview but apparently some priorities shifted and they're not hiring for that job anymore) and do a story.

Yeah, I was planning on talking to him last week, but hopefully I'll be able to get a full video interview on Tuesday. Working on improving my video production skills while (hopefully) wrapping up my interview process with places. Meanwhile, I interviewed another couple players and have those up on my blog (they're only written pieces).
