May 25 -- BREAKING: Amidst the injury to Darron Thomas, the Thunder have added a new quarterback to the mix.
Little-used Jacksonville Sharks QB Alex Carder has been obtained by Portland in a trade from the Jacksonville Sharks in exchange for claim position.
Carder is in his second AFL season. He has yet to throw a pass this season, but has rushed for 1 yard on two carries in two games of action. He also has 3 assisted tackles on special teams. In 2014 with the Sharks, he completed 2 of 3 passes for 19 yards in four games. He also caught four passes for 56 yards last season. and registered 2.5 special teams tackles. He spent training camp in 2014 with then-Iowa Barnstormers head coach Mike Hohensee, now head coach of the Thunder.
Carder, 6'2" and 220 pounds out of Western Michigan, signed as an undrafted free agent with the NFL's Detroit Lions, but was released a month later. He spent time on the Canadian Football League's Ottawa Redblacks last season, and also served a stint with the Nashville Venom of the Professional Indoor Football League.
He threw for 3,434 yards and rushed for 253 yards as a junior at Western Michigan. He threw for 7 scores and ran for another in a 66-63 loss to Toledo in November 2011.
No official word has been released by the Thunder regarding the extent of Thomas' injury. He was expected to have an MRI upon his return to Portland. The injury came in the second quarter when he scrambled to the right and was tackled into the side wall during the Thunder's 69-43 loss to the Orlando Predators on May 23, his 25th birthday.
Carder will likely back up Kyle Rowley, who started the season under center for the Thunder, but was replaced by Thomas two weeks ago.
Shortly after reporting to the Redblacks last year, Tim Baines of the Ottawa Sun penned this article on Carder, entitled Ottawa RedBlacks backup QB taking his lumps.
