ANGI'S TAKES
THUNDER
Portland is looking to build some sustainability after losing five of their last six. The good news for this one is that the lone win in that time came over the KISS. The Thunder can sweep the season series with a win here. Brooks has been a bright spot, having returned four kickoffs the past four weeks, including two in the loss to the Sabercats last week. Rowley started in place of Darron Thomas last week, but had miserable results. He threw for just 75 yards, a touchdown and a pair of interceptions. He was replaced late in the third quarter by recent trade acquisition Carder, who completed 5 of 8 passes for 89 yards, two touchdowns and a late interception. No single receiver has stepped up in Jamar Howard's absence, but Perry seemed to respond well to Carder. It has yet to be decided at this writing whether Rowley or Carder will get the start at quarterback for this game. Odiase registered a game-high 12 tackles against the Sabercats. Obi has 3 sacks in his last three games. The team signed defensive back Dwight McLean, who started 17 games for the Thunder last season.
KISS
What can you say about Los Angeles other than they are still looking for their first win. Dating back to last season, the KISS have lost 15 straight and one of their last 24 (their last win was a 69-61 decision over the Thunder on June 14, 2014). They nearly completed a comeback at home last week against Jacksonville, but were intercepted in the end zone on the final play of the game. Southwick has been thrown into the mix and has played well, but lacks a solid supporting cast. Southwick has gone 58 of 91 for 582 yards, 9 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Morgan is one of the better receivers in the league and has 71 catches for 1,050 yards and 21 touchdowns this season. He has 16 catches for 190 yards and 6 scores in the two previous games against the Thunder this season. Sampson caught 11 passes for 104 yards against the Sharks last week and could emerge as a secondary target. Kizer had 9 tackles, and Scott added 8 tackles and a forced fumble against the Sharks. Scott also returned 4 kickoffs for a 31.0 average against the Sharks.
QUOTABLE
Is head coach Mike Hohensee losing control of the team:
“You practice all week and you just got to go out and execute it. As soon as people started doing their own thing, the kind of results we had (in the loss to the Sabercats), happened ... At this time when you're trying to win games, you're trying to build trust in players. Who can you trust to be in there in these times. We're going to go down to L.A.; on the road, again. We haven't won a game on the road. We're going to go down there with a bunch of guys. After a loss like this, who can you trust. Who are the guys who are just going to do what you ask them to do?”
FEATURED TWEETS
EXTRA
New Thunder QB Alex Carder, working on just one day practice with the team after being traded to Portland by the Jacksonville Sharks, entered last week's game against the Sabercats late in the third quarter. He connected on his first two passes, including a 39 yard touchdown strike to Jared Perry on his second throw. The only blemish on his performance was an interception in the end zone with the Thunder down by 18 with 5:29 when the team was looking for a quick score. He finished the game 5 of 8 for 89 yards, 2 touchdowns and the pick. Carder's play suggested that he could be named the starter in this game over veteran Kyle Rowley. Our own bsquared asks that very question on his site, Wrong Way Sports. Below are Carder's comments after the game.
