ANGI'S TAKES
SHARKS: Jacksonville dropped their first four games, but are solidifying themselves for a playoff spot after winning six of their last seven. Their talent level is considered one of the highest in the AFL. Fullback Derrick Ross leads all AFL players in rush attempts (113), yards (444) and touchdowns (25), and it's not even close. He is a threat to score or to pick up a first down on any play. Tommy Grady is a solid quarterback who ranks fourth in the league in both passing yards and touchdowns. Anthony "Tiger" Jones tops the league in receiving yards and Joe Hills is a very reliable second option at receiver. Joe Sykes' 13 sacks leads the AFL. Alvin Ray Jackson and Greg Reid have 6 and 5 interceptions, respectively.
THUNDER: Portland is a mess on the field and in the front office (just 21 months into the franchise's existence, their fifth team president has resigned). Right now they are on the outside looking in when it comes to the playoff race. While quarterback Kyle Rowley is sixth in the league in passing yards , he has completed just 58.3 percent of his passes this season. Jared Perry has 27 receptions for 429 and 10 touchdowns in his last three games. John Martinez had 4 rushing touchdowns in the last game against the Outlaws. The big news of the week is the return of defensive back Varmah Sonie at defensive back, who had 9 interceptions last season and was named to the AFL all-first team. The Thunder have just 8 picks this season.
QUOTABLE
Thunder head coach Mike Hohensee
“I don’t know how many we need to win. but we need to win as many as possible, and win in good fashion, so if we do get into the playoffs, we have some momentum.”
