KASEY'S TAKES
THUNDER: The Thunder are riding high after their 72-48 win last week over Jacksonville. The score set franchise records in points, touchdowns (11) and margin of victory. They are battling for a playoff spot among the bottom four teams in the National Conference. Rowley was very efficient, throwing for 6 touchdowns. He ran for another. It was also the first game this season where he has not thrown a return. Varmah Sonie came n interception. Rowley has an array of receivers to spread the ball to, including Jared Perry, V'Keon Lacey, Perez Ashford and Duane Brooks. Brooks is also a threat to take it to the house on every kickoff return. Varmah Sonie returned to the Thunder last week and had 7 tackles and an interception.
SABERCATS: The Sabercats have clinched the Pacific Division crown and are looking to gain home field advantage in the playoffs, something which was made much easier with the Arizona Rattlers loss on July 17 to the Spokane Shock. Erik Meyer as about as good as it gets at quarterback. He's fifth in the league in passing yards and fourth in touchdown tosses. Reggie Gray leads the league in receptions and receiving touchdowns, and he has had the advantage of being healthy all season. Adron Tennel and D.J. Stephens are also viable receiving options for Meyer. Kicker Nick Pertuit is reliable and leads the AFL in points with 122. Ken Fontenette leads the Sabercats' defense with 10 interceptions and 113 tackles.
QUOTABLE
DB Varmah Sonie on his first game back with the Thunder
“It felt good being out there with the guys and making plays for my team. I did get a little tired, but these are the games you work for.”
DL Marquis Jackson on last week's win
“Everybody had had enough The bye week ate at us. We felt we had won that game and had it taken away from us. It wasn’t a good feeling. Everybody took their anger and applied it positively. We came back focused. We had a great week of practice. Tonight everybody executed, and at the end of the day we were the better team.”
