July 25 -- According to reports, the Blazers are considering offering Cleveland Cavaliers guard Matthew Dellavedova a four-year, $23 million contract which would include a trade kicker. The reports are unsubstantiated at this time.
CSNNW reported that the Blazers had interest in obtaining Dellavedova, and the twitter account for CavsSportsTalk tweeted yesterday that Portland is "shopping Cavs' Restricted Free Agent, Matthew Dellavedova."
If the team does, in in fact extend an offer to Dellavedova, the Cavaliers would have 72 hours to match it. If the Cavaliers decided against matching, he would become a Blazer.
Dellavedova is a 6'4", 200-lb. combo guard who will be entering his third season. Not known as a scorer, he has shown an ability to defend and finish. He averaged 4.8 points and 3.0 assists in 21 minutes last season, and 7.2 points and 2.7 assists in the playoffs.
Originally from Australia, he played in the South East Australian League for the Australian Institute of Sport before coming to the United States to attend St. Mary's University.
The Cavaliers, have re-signed LeBron James and Kevin Love, and are in negotiations with forward Tristan Thompson. Their projected salary cap is already at over $100 million ($30 million over the salary cap). It is unknown if they would attempt to match and go farther over the cap.
Should Dellavedova become a Blazer, he would join a crowded backcourt which now features Damian Lillard, CJ McCollum, Gerald Henderson, Pat Connaughton, Allen Crabbe, Tim Frazier, Luis Montero and Phil Pressey. The latter five's contracts are not guaranteed for the upcoming season, however.
The Cavaliers also are reportedly interested in trading big man Brendan Haywood, with Portland being a possible trade partner. The most floated rumor involves the Blazers sending a $3.2 million trade exception in exchange for Haywood and possibly a second round pick. Most of the conversations have the team waiving Haywood.
