JULIANNE'S TAKES
CLIPPERS
Los Angeles has gotten off to a roughly rocky start this season, but they have been picked by the majority of prognosticators to finish in the top four and earn home court advantage in the Western Conference playoffs. The roster is stacked from one to 12. Blake Griffin, one of the NBA's darlings, leads the team in scoring. DeAndre Jordan is showing why his teammates coerced him into returning to La La Land after having made his initial free agency commitment to the Dallas Mavericks. Chris Paul's 8.0 assists per game are pedestrian by his standards, but he is still an NBA premiere point guard. Jamal Crawford, Austin Rivers and Paul Pierce provide an excellent supporting cast J.J. Redick will start if he is healthy. Key to a Los Angeles win: Step on the gas and don't let up.
BLAZERS
Portland either starts well, or comes on strong. There is no in between, and it's leaving fans wondering if this team is capable of playing a full 48-minute game. Forget that the team is young and newly constructed, there are enough veterans and spunk to hold on to a 17-point fourth quarter lead. This team starts and ends with Damian Lillard, who will have to shoot better than the 6-19 that he did against the Rockets. Al-Farouq Aminu had a very nice game against the Rockets, with 16 points and a season-high 15 boards. Allen Crabbe scored 13 of his 15 points in the first half. Mason Plumlee recorded 6 blocks and CJ McCollum was semi-effective in the second half. Maurice Harkless can provide a spark. Key to a Portland win: Keep the Clippers off the boards and limit their turnovers.
