June 1, 2016 -
I speak for this forum as its president when I say I am saddened at the shooting today at the Engineering School at UCLA.
I have just finished my second year as a medical student at UCLA and I feel fortunate that I am on summer break and was not on campus when this shooting occurred. I do have summer labs, but neither of those take place on a Wednesday.
The shooting was a murder-suicide between a professor student. Professor William S. Klug (pictured above), who was an associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering. He studied the interaction between mechanics and biology. He was 39 years old.
“I am absolutely devastated,” said Alan Garfinkel, a professor of integrative biology and physiology who worked with Klug to develop a computer generated virtual heart. “You cannot ask for a nicer, gentler, sweeter and more supportive guy than William Klug.”
As is the policy of this site, the shooter will not be identified, as we do not seek to promote their act(s). Authorities have confirmed that he was a student, and the second fatality in this event.
I have never met Professor Klug, though my prayers and thoughts, and I believe the prayers and thoughts of our staff and members, are with his family and friends at this tragic time.

Such sad news to hear. Thoughts are with everyone at UCLA who were affected.

I am not really connected there, but I would like to talk with someone who know Professor Klug. All reports are that he was a popular instructor.

This stuff makes me sick. I can't imagine what possesses somebody to make a decision to do an act like this. Especially from a teacher.

This stuff makes me sick. I can't imagine what possesses somebody to make a decision to do an act like this. Especially from a teacher. I don't even know the full circumstances about this. It may have just been a teacher-student thing. Still, any time someone thinks they can come into a populated area with a weapon, we can only hope they either did not get the answer they wanted or that they are seeking notoriety. Either reason are exactly why we will not honor a shooter on SCtoC. The media will plaster their name all over the place and try to analyze the motive. I have talked to Kassandra about this and we are in strict agreement that for whatever size of a site we are or will become, we will not glorify these people.

This is so sad. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.
I am glad we will not submit the name of this shooter or any other shooter on this site. It is the right thing to do.
