The first member of the Spokane Empire's 2016 Intense Conference Championship team is returning for 2017, as the Empire announced the re-signing of QB Charles Dowdell.
Dowdell (6'0'', 200 lbs) returns for his second season as a member of the Empire. In his first season with the expansion franchise, he started all 16 games, leading Spokane to an Intense Conference title with a 12-4 record, including an Intense Conference Championship victory and an appearance in the United Bowl. The veteran out of Saginaw Valley State completed 61.9% of his passes (263-of-425) for 2,735 yards, 63 touchdown passes and 21 interceptions. His 61 touchdown passes were tied with Green Bay Blizzard QB Matt Behrendt for the most in the IFL. He was also effective in the running game as a dual-threat with Trevor Kennedy, rushing for 442 yards and 7 scores. His excellent play earned him Second Team All-IFL Honors as well as the first IFL Weekly award in Empire history, taking home IFL Offensive Player of the Week honors in Week 1.
“Charles will be a major key to our success in 2017. With his ability and leadership, we are excited to announce his return,” Empire Head Coach Adam Shackleford said in the team's press announcement. “We are working very hard to surround him with the pieces he needs to chase the title again this upcoming season.”
Prior to his arrival in Spokane, Dowdell got his start in the IFL with the Bloomington Edge in 2011. In 2013, he was a member of the Green Bay Blizzard, playing at wide receiver. In 2014, Dowdell returned to the Edge, this time as members of the CPIFL. In 2015, he played for the Sioux City Bandits of the CIF, passing for 2,128 yards and 48 TDs, leading the Bandits to a Champions Bowl title over the Texas Revolution. He also finished the season as the CIF's MVP and named First Team All-Conference honors.
Before he began his indoor football career, Dowdell played two seasons at Indiana State University before transferring to finish at Saginaw Valley State. With the Cadinals, he played in 21 games and recorded 3,784 passing yards and 27 passing touchdowns. He also was a threat on the ground, rushing for 1,327 rushing yards and 16 rushing touchdowns.
