Training Camp is still 12 days away, but the Spokane Empire have remained anything but idle when it comes to free agency with the signing of rookie OL Cassidy Curtis to the 2017 roster.
With the departures of OL James Atoe and Dave Lefotu to the AFL, Curtis (6'6'', 310 lbs) steps in to compete for a spot on the Empire's roster. Curtis is no stranger to the Spokane area, having played his collegiate football career at Eastern Washington University. A redshirt freshman in 2011, he went on to play in 42 games from 2012-2015, provided protection for star QB Vernon Adams III. He was part of an offensive unit that guided the Eagles to three straight Big Sky Conference titles and three FCS Playoff Appearances.
2013 was a monster season for Curtis and the Eagles offense, beginning the season with a 49-46 upset of #25 ranked Oregon State Beavers in which the Eagles amassed a whopping 625 yards of total offense. He went on to help Eastern set Big Sky and school records with 592 points, 83 touchdowns and 8,002 yards of offense. As a collective offensive unit, the Eagles led the FCS in passing efficiency (182.6), and ranked 4th in total offense (533.5 yards/game), 4th in passing, 41st in rushing (183.7 yards/game), and 7th in scoring (39.3 points/game). His play, along with his fellow offensive linemen, earned two Beyond Sports Network's FCS Offensive Line of the Week Awards. Records would continue to fall for the Eagles in 2014, as he contributed to an offensive powerhouse that scored 50 or more points in 6 games for the first time in school history.
A native of Denver, CO, Curtis played his high school football career at Cherry Creek High, where he earned honorable mention 5A All-State and first team All-Creek Conference honors. He was also praised by Rivals.com, listing him as the 19th prospect overall in the state of Colorado.
Among those thrilled to see Curtis in an Empire uniform is the Empire's radio play-by-play, Larry Weir, who also covers EWU football.
