SPOKANE, WA - Three days before their Monday night tilt with the Salt Lake Screaming Eagles, the Spokane Empire made some changes to their wide receiver corps.
The team announced on Friday that WR Samuel Charles (6'3'', 210 lbs) has been activated off of Short Term Injured Reserve and will make his season debut on Monday night. He was placed on Short Term IR prior to the regular season due to what the team referred to as a "minor knee injury."
Monday's debut will officially mark Charles's second season with the Empire and his third overall season in the IFL. In 2016, his physical presence in the red zone and deep threat ability made an impact during Spokane's inaugural IFL season, making 41 receptions for 456 yards and 13 touchdowns in 13 games. He was Spokane's leading scorer during the 2016 playoffs, catching 6 passes for 98 yards and 5 touchdowns.
As a result of bringing Charles onto the active roster, the Empire released WR Carl Sims (6'0'', 190 lbs). The nine year IFL veteran led the Empire in receiving last year, making 71 catches for 822 yards and 20 touchdowns. He played in the Empire's first two games this season, registering 7 receptions for 76 yards and 1 touchdown.
Under IFL rules, teams may only keep seven players with more than three years of experience. Charles (4 seasons) and Sims (9 seasons) are both classified as veterans, forcing the Empire to release Sims to stay under the veteran roster limit.
The Empire take on the Screaming Eagles at the Maverik Center in West Valley City, UT on Monday night. Kickoff is scheduled at 6 p.m. PST. You can catch the action locally on the radio on 700 ESPN AM, 105.3 FM, or online at 700ESPN.com. The game will be broadcast on the IFL's Official YouTube account.
