SPOKANE, WA - Spokane Empire QB Charles Dowdell has been named Vidswap.com's Offensive Player of the Week for Week 5.
Dowdell (6'0'', 210 lbs) bounced back from a rough game against the Salt Lake Screaming Eagles, guiding Spokane to a 70-37 crushing of the Colorado Crush. In his best performance so far this season, he completed 17 of 23 passes for 200 yards, 7 TDs and 0 INTs. Four of his touchdown passes were caught by rookie WR Devonn Brown, who was a runner up for the Week 5 OPotW Award with the best game of his short IFL career.
After an up-and-down start to the regular season, Dowdell appears to be returning to the high level performance that made him a 2016 Second Team All-IFL selection. So far this season, Dowdell ranks in the Top 5 with 614 passing yards (4th), 16 TDs (2nd), a 61.3 completion percentage (5th), 8.2 passing yards per attempt (1st), and 153.5 passing yards per game (5th). He currently ranks as the Empire's leading rusher with 172 rushing yards.
Dowdell's award makes it four consecutive weeks that a member of the Empire has been nominated for Player of the Week Honors, and the second consecutive week an Empire Player has been named Offensive Player of the Week. DBs Robert Brown and Tyree Robinson won Defensive Player of the Week honors in Week 2 and Week 3, respectively, and RB Trevor Kennedy was named Offensive Player of the Week in Week 4.
This week's award is Dowdell's second overall Offensive Player of the Week award during his time in an Empire uniform. He previously won the Week 1 Offensive Player of the Week in 2016.
In addition to Brown, the other honorable mentions for Offensive Player of the Week for Week 5 include WR Damond Powell (Cedar Rapids), QB Matt Behrendt (Green Bay), and RB Robbie Rouse (Sioux Falls).
The other IFL Week 5 winners include:
Defensive Player of the Week - DB Manny Asprilla, Green Bay Blizzard
Special Teams Player of the Week - DB Carlton Watkins, Sioux Falls Storm
Celebration of the Week - TBA
This Friday, the Empire return home to the Spokane Arena to face off against the Salt Lake Screaming Eagles. Kickoff is scheduled at 7 p.m. PST. You can catch the action locally on the radio on 700 ESPN AM, 105.3 FM, or online at 700ESPN.com. The game will be broadcast on the IFL's Official YouTube account.
