WEST VALLEY CITY, UT - Verlon Reed's spectacular game of four touchdown passes and four touchdown runs were not enough to lead the Screaming Eagles past the Arizona Rattlers Friday night.
The Rattlers pulled out the 73-60 win in the first-ever meeting of these teams.
Arizona's Jamal Miles returned the opening kickoff 56 yards to the end zone to open the game. Miles also rushed for two scores in the first quarter as the Rattlers took a 20-13 lead.
The Screaming Eagles led 29-27 with under a minute to go, but the Rattlers scored on Sawyer Petre's 21-yard field goal. Following an interception of Reed by Allen Chapman. On the ensuing play, Cody Sokol hit Fred Williams for 42 yards and a touchdown and the Rattlers went into the half up 38-29
Reed was intercepted to open the third quarter and the Rattlers extended the lead to 45-29. Salt Lake was never able to get to closer than 12 points. The final score provided each team with its highest point total of the season.
The Screaming Eagles amassed 264 yards to the Rattlers' 229. Arizona rushed for eight touchdowns in the game. The Rattlers were penalized nine times for 69 yards while the Screaming Eagles were flagged seven times for 51 yards.
Sokol completed six of 10 passes for 102 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Darrell Monroe rushed 14 times for 80 yards with five trips to the end zone, while Miles has 22 yards on 14 carries with three touchdowns. Williams caught three balls for 64 yards and a score. Nathan Lindsey led the Rattlers with 7.5 total tackles including two tackles for loss. Arkeith Brown and Allen Chapman each had interceptions for the Rattlers.
Reed went 20 of 32 for 162 yards with four interceptions and two interceptions. He rushed 11 times for 107 yards and four scores. Devin Mahina caught six passes for 45 yards and a touchdown, while Juwan Dotson had five receptions for 34 yards and a score. Cy Strahm had three grabs for 30 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Don Unamba led Salt Lake with 7.5 tackles, while Jerrod Black recorded two sacks. Gianni Olivas had an interception and Ben Compton scored on a fumble recovery for the Screaming Eagles.
The Rattlers (4-3) will host the Spokane Empire (5-2) on April 22 at 6 p.m. (pacific). The Screaming Eagles (1-6) will be in Nebraska to face the Danger (4-4) on April 22 with a 5:05 p.m. (pacific) Kickoff. All times are pacific time.
