A 5'11" 195-lb. defensive back and running back for the Screaming Eagles, James Calhoun is terrorizing opposing quarterbacks and wide receivers. In week 11, he intercepted Spokane Empire quarterback Charles Dowdell three times, returning one for a touchdown. Calhoun has particularly enjoyed playing against the Empire this season. He posted a 28.0 kickoff return average and returned one of those kicks for a touchdown in week four. In week 6, he made an impact on the offensive side of the ball, catching six passes for 51 yards.
Calhoun played for Riverside City College in Riverside, California. He has a co-team leading four interceptions on the season, as well as 12.5 total tackles, a pass break-up and a tackles for a loss this season for Salt Lake.
Calhoun took a moment to answer our questions:
1. What do you consider to be your greatest achievement in football so far?
My greatest achievement in football so far is being able to handle adversity. Learning to deal with that help me to continue chasing my dream even-though teams told me they're going a different way.
2. What were your first impressions of Project FANchise and the Salt Lake Screaming Eagles?
My first impression about the FANchise was scary. Fan picking the plays off just emotion is super different. And my impression about the Screaming Eagles was great because they're a first year team and they welcomed me with open arms and believing in me to help this team progress.
3. What was it that made you want to come to Utah and to earn a roster spot on the team?
What made want to come to Utah and earn a roster spot is the hunt. Other good players fighting for the same spot and you getting that spot after all the work you put in is a reward in itself.
4. Who has inspired you the most in your football career and in life?
The person that inspired me the most in my career and in life is my mother. She was a single parent and never settled and until she got what she felt that she deserved. Not matter what I wanted she always told me to go get it. No matter what it took or how long it takes never give up until you get what you deserve.
5. What is your biggest long-term goal for your football career?
My biggest long-term goal in football is to always be apart of it. If I'm playing, coaching, or in the organization; I just want to be in the football world as long as I can.
6. What would you like to accomplish this season?
What I would like to achieve this season is to be at battle with my brothers every game. Winning is fun but to play the game you love with brothers that love the sport as much as you do is a great feeling. And to win a champion haha.
7. What are you looking forward to most about being a Screaming Eagle?
The thing I work forward to the most being a Screaming Eagles is to put in the work with my brothers and putting a great show for the fans. With the fans we would be here. So making the fans happy by working and winning is what I'm looking forward to.
8. What would you like Screaming Eagles and IFL fans to know about you?
What I would like the Screaming Eagles to know about me is that I don't have any quit in me. We can up by 20 or down by 100, I'm going to play the game the same no matter what. I got nothing dog in. Woof. The IFL! I want them to know that I plan on help the Eagles win a championship and there ain't nothing any team can do about it because we a family that ain't running from anyone and we here to stay. Talons up!
