WEST VALLEY CITY, UT - Verlon Reed did it to the Crush again.
For the second time this season, Reed led the Screaming Eagles to a touchdown drive in the final seconds, coupled with a two-point conversion, to overtake the Colorado Crush Friday night, 38-37.
The Screaming Eagles forced overtime in the teams' first meeting (week 2). After the Crush scored, Reed marched Salt Lake down field for the score. The two-point conversion gave the Screaming Eagles the 42-41 overtime win. The Screaming Eagles have beaten the Crush in three of the four meetings this season and, with this win, picked up their first home win of the season. The 1-10 Cedar Rapids Titans are the only IFL team to have not won a home game this season.
he Crush had took a 37-30 lead on Josh Ford's one-yard run midway through the fourth quarter, a lead which they held for over three minutes. The Screaming Eagles got the ball with 33 seconds left, going on a six-play drive. Reed found James Poole in the end zone from eight yards out. Mahina's two-point conversion pass to Devin Mahina was enough to give Salt Lake the win.
The Screaming Eagles scored the game's first 10 points, on a six-yard run from Reed, and a 30-yard field goal from Josh Wilson. Colorado came storming back. The Crush opened the second quarter with a 21-yard field goal from Spencer Groner. They tied the game at 10-10 on Sean Goldrich's 31-yard pass to Chris Gant. They took the lead on Goldrich's seven-yard pass to Kyle Kaiser with just over a minute to go in the first half. The Screaming Eagles scored just before the half on Mahina's 10-yard pass from Reed.
Goldrich found Kaiser for a score on the Crush's first drive of the second half, and completed to Lovie Rose III for another touchdown to put the Crush up 31-16 just over four minutes into the third quarter.
Salt Lake scored twice in a row in the third and the fourth on Reed's 25-yard pass to Chris Robinson and a three-yard run from Reed to draw to within one at 31-30.
Of the four meetings between the teams this season three of them were decided by three or fewer points.
The Screaming Eagles led in total offense, 224 to 135 yards. They led in passing at 171 to 122 and in rushing at 53 to 13. Both teams were penalized eight times; the Crush for 47 yards the Screaming Eagles for 44 yards.
Reed completed 18 of 31 passes for 175 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. He led all rushers with 48 rushing yards on 16 carries and a pair of scores. Poole caught seven passes for 56 yards and his late touchdown. Mahina caught five balls for 48 yards and a score, while Robinson finished with three receptions for 42 yards and a touchdown. Delric Ellington added three receptions for 29 yards. Ed Burns led Salt Lake with 4.5 total tackles, while Juwan Dotson and Kelvin Lee each an interception.
Goldrich went 14 of 27 for 131 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions. Ford rushed nine times for 18 yards and a score. Rose led the Crush in receiving with six grabs for 54 yards and a touchdown. Gant had 36 yards on two receptions and a score. Kaiser caught four passes for 34 yards and two touchdowns. Azziz Higgins tallied eight total tackles. Kwame Bell had an interception and Phillip Lewis had a sack.
The Screaming Eagles (3-8) will visit the Arizona Rattlers (7-4) on May 20 at 6 p.m. The Crush (2-9) will host the Spokane Empire (7-4) on May 18 at 6 p.m. Note that game has been moved from its original May 19 scheduled date.
