ANALYSIS
This is the 2018 opener for the Indoor Football League, held at the home of league headquarters in Grand Island, about a 90-minute drive west from Lincoln. Both rosters have new looks to them and will look to get the new season off to a positive start.
Cedar Rapids struggled last season, winning just a single game; a 41-37 final over the Blizzard in Green Bay on April 1, 2017. The Titans did not win a home game in 2017. They were competitive against the Danger last season, falling 50-38 on April 28 in Cedar Rapids, and losing 52-46 on June 3 in Grand Island. Former NFL All-Pro linebacker Marvin Jones takes the helm of the Titans after serving as interim Head Coach of the Colorado Crush the last half of last season. Jones played 11 years in the NFL from 1993 to 2003 with the New York Jets. He was selected fourth overall in the 1993 NFL Draft.
Brion Carnes is gone as the quarterback of the Titans, and will be replaced by E.J. Hillard. He will be the sixth different opening day quarterback for Cedar Rapids in its six IFL seasons. Former Nebraska Cornhusker Imani Cross is the featured running back. Cross amassed 1,606 rushing yards and 28 scores in four seasons as a Cornhusker. Wide receiver Connor Hollenbeck looks to improve on his 2017 season of 46 catches for 550 yards and 13 touchdowns. The defense is young, but has added some pieces which should make it more competitive this season. Defensive back James Calhoun comes over from the defunct Sale Lake Screaming Eagles. Calhoun was the 2017 IFL Defensive Player of the Year while leading the IFL with 9 interceptions. Among the returnees is kicker Michael Georgetti, who completed 56 percent of his extra points and 38 percent of his field goals last season.
Nebraska came just one game from an appearance in the United Bowl last season. The Danger were defeated by the Arizona Rattlers in Phoenix in the Intense Conference Championship game 62-36. The Danger last appeared in the United Bowl in 2015 when they fell to the Sioux Falls Storm, 62-27. They also fell to the Storm in the 2013 and 2014 United Bowls. Nebraska has finished five of its seven regular seasons with plus-.500 records. Mark Stoute is the new head coach of the Danger. Ironically, he previously served in the same capacity of the Titans, compiling a 41-17 record in his tenure in Cedar Rapids and winning Coach of the Year honors in 2013.
Damien Fleming is back in the IFL after a one-year hiatus, and will take over under center for the Danger. With the Colorado Crush in 2016, Fleming passed for 2,745 yards and 57 touchdowns. He also rushed for 19 scores on 432 yards for the Crush. Angelo Pease could see a good chuck of carries in the running game. wide receiver Eric Thomas could provide a solid target for Fleming, having accumulated 419 yards on 37 receptions with 8 touchdowns in 2017. The Danger possess a strong rushing attack. defensive lineman Ra'Shawde Myers was second in the IFL in sacks last season with 11 while lining up with the Iowa Barnstormers. Fellow defensive lineman Xzavie Jackson has proven is sack pedigree as he is the all-time sack leader in the IFL with 77. Rookie Brad Hatfield will handle the kicking duties. Hatfield attended college at the University of Sioux Falls.
