2/23/18 --
In a game of streaks, the Nebraska Danger were able to put away the Cedar Rapids Titans tonight, 44-31, in the Indoor Football League's 2018 season opener.
The Danger scored on their first possession of the game, with running back Angelo Pease running it in from 4 yards out. Cedar Rapids countered with a 6-yard scramble from quarterback Jake Medlock. Following a missed field goal attempt by the Danger, Medlock was sacked in the end zone for a safety, and The Danger's lead was 9-6 at the end of the first quarter.
Please put the Danger up by 10 with a 7-yard run early in the second quarter. They extended that lead to 23-6 on wide receiver Eric Thomas' 8-yard touchdown grab from quarterback Damien Fleming. However, the Titans would score a pair of touchdowns in the final 12 seconds of the first half. The first came on wide receiver Tyler Thomas' 6-yard touchdown from Medlock, followed by a 1-yard run with four seconds to go in the half.
The second half began on a seldom-seen rouge y Cedar Rapids when defensive back Corey Neely Jr. prevented the Danger from getting out of the end zone on the opening kickoff. Nebraska struck back on a 1-yard rush from Fleming to take a 30-22 lead. Kicker Michael Georgetti cut into the lead for the Titans with an 18-yard field goal, which was countered by Fleming's 3-yard run for another score. The Danger led 37-25 at the end of the third.
Fleming found a wide open Dent in the end zone for a 17-yard touchdown to put the Danger up 44-25 with 2:52 left in the fourth. Hollenbeck's touchdown catch from Medlock from six yards out accounted for the final score of 44-31.
The game was fairly clean for an early season contest. Each team only had two accepted penalties. The Titans were unable to convert a first down on any of their three fourth-down attempts. That halted three separate possessions which, essentially, cost them the game. The Danger rushed for 117 yards while the Titans managed 84.
The Danger's Fleming was excellent in his return to the IFL. He completed 12 of 17 passes for 106 yards and a pair of scores, and ran 10 times for 56 yards and another two touchdowns. Pease accumulated 52 yards on 14 carries along with 2 touchdowns of his own. In addition to his touchdown, Dent caught 6 passes for 58 yards. Eric Thomas added 5 receptions for 44 yards and a touchdown. Mike Tavarres had 10 total tackles and a sack for the Danger defense. Defensive linemen Ra'shawde Myers and Xzavie Jackson also each had a sack.
Medlock completed 16 or 26 throws for 129 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing 4 times for 19 yards and a pair of scores for the Titans. Tyler Thomas had 50 yards on 12 yards. He also caught five passes for 32 yards and a touchdown. Hollenbeck caught 5 balls for 34 34 yards, finding the end zone once. Defensive back Cedrick Dozier let the Titans defense with 9 total tackles. Defensive lineman Ricarlo Bell recorded a sack and defensive backQua Cox recovered a fumble.
The Titans (0-1) will host the Green Bay Blizzard on March 2 at 5:05 p.m. (PT). The Danger (1-0) have a week 2 bye before hosting the Blizzard on March 11 at 1 p.m. (PT). Both games, as well as all IFL games this season, will be streamed live on the IFL's Official YouTube Channel. SCtoC will present previews of those, and all game this season.
