FINAL - Barnstormers 38, Rattlers 28
3/10/18 --
DES MOINES - A strong defensive effort, including three interceptions, helped lead the Iowa Barnstormers to a 38-28 win over the Arizona Rattlers tonight.
The teams renewed a rivalry dating back to the days of the Arena Football league, in which Arizona was a member for 24 seasons and the Barnstormers for 11 seasons.
The Rattlers bit first on a 13-yard pass from Jeff Ziemba to Anthony Amos, but Sawyer Petre's extra point try went wide right. The Barnstormers countered on a 13-yard run from quarterback Drew Powell. Cody Barber's extra point put the Barnstormers up 7-6 mid way through the opening quarter. Ziemba was intercepted in the end zone by Iowa's Bryce Enyard to close out the quarter.
Iowa took advantage of the interception by capping off the drive when Sheldon Augustine took a pitch to the right and sped into the end zone from 23 yards. The Barnstormers defense then held the Rattlers on fourth-and-two to get the ball back. The Barnstormers stalled on the ensuing drive and Barner's 49-yard field goal try was just wide to the left. Arizona drove down as the second half expired, but their offense was stuffed by Iowa's defense as time expired. The Barnstormers led 14-6 at halftime.
The Barnstormers marched down field on the opening drive of the first quarter, capping a six-play, 34-yard drive with a 6-yard touchdown pass from Powell to Brady Roland. Ziemba's second interception of the game gave the Barnstormers the ball in their own territory, but they were unable to mount a drive to point points on the ground.Jamal Miles cut the Rattlers' deficit to 21-13 with a 5-yard run. That would be the score heading into the fourth quarter.
Iowa went up early in the fourth quarter on a 24-yard pass from Powell to Roland where the latter, held on to by a Rattler defender, skipped and dove into the end zone. The Rattlers countered when Darrell Monroe found a wide open hole into the end zone from a yard out. Monroe ran it in for the two-point conversion and the Barnstormers' lead was cut to 28-21. Powell put the Barnstormers up 35-21 with 5:06 left in the fourth when he scampered around the right side for seven years.
After Enyard's second interception of the game, a high snap went over the head of Powell and the Rattlers recovered the fumble. The Rattlers scored on Amos' 5-yard pass from Ziemba to make it a one-score game at 35-28. The Rattlers recovered the onside kick, but they were stopped on downs and the Barnstormers took over with 28 seconds left. Barber iced the win with a 30-yard field goal with 11 seconds left.
The teams were comparable statistically, with the Rattlers outgaining the Barnstormers in total offense with 208 yards to 184 yards. The Rattlers recovered two fumbles and the Barntormers had a trio of interceptions. A key was the Barnstormers' defense stopping the Rattlers four of five times on fourth down, including three times in the end zone.
The first penalty of the game did not come until the 11:38 mark of the third quarter; a personal foul for roughing the passer against the Rattlers which set up the opening touchdown of the second half for the Barnstormers. Powell put the Barnstormers up 35-21 when he scampered around the right side for seven years.
Powell went 9 of 18 passing for 88 yards and a pair of touchdown throws. He made his mark on the ground, punishing the Rattlers for 72 yards on 19 carries and two scores. Augustine, who left the game in the second quarter with an injury, scored on a 23-yard run, and caught 3 passes for 27 yards. Roland caught 4 passes for 48 yards. Bryce Enyard added 2 interceptions to his 5.5 total tackles. Jordan Wickliffe accounted for the third interception. Zachary Allen led Iowa with 6.5 total tackles.
Ziemba, starting his first ever game for the injured Verlon Reed Jr., completed 13 of his 29 attempts for 121 yards with 2 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. Jamal Miles rushed 5 times for 23 yards and a touchdown, while catching 4 passes for 43 yards. Shadrach Thornton rushed 5 times for 29 yards. Amos caught 5 balls for 43 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He now has three of the Rattlers' four touchdown receptions on the season. Veteran Arkieth Brown tallied 7.5 tackles, and Joshua Gordon recovered a fumble for the Rattlers. Justin Shirk recorded a sack.
The Barnstormers (2-0) will host the Sioux Falls Storm (0-1) on May 18 with a 1:05 p.m. pacific (3:05 p.m. central) kickoff. The Rattlers (1-1) also will be at home, hosting the Green Bay Blizzard (0-2) on March 18 with kickoff slated for 3:05 p.m. pacific (5:05 p.m. central).
Both games, as well as all IFL games this season, will be streamed live on the IFL's Official YouTube Channel. SCtoC will present previews of those, and all, games this season. Those previews will be posted on the board of the home team in each game.
