PHOENIX, AZ - The Arizona Rattlers went on a 21-point run in through the first and second quarters, and held the Nebraska Danger at bay to pick the win tonight in week 5 of the Indoor Football League season.
The Rattlers moved to 3-1 on the season. The Danger suffered their first loss of the season and also stand at 3-1.
Shadrach Thornton continued his hot hand on the ground from last week, scoring on 3 touchdown runs. He also had 3 touchdown runs in the Rattlers win over the Green Bay Blizzard.
Thornton scored on the first offensive play of the game, on a 17-yard run. Jesse Scroggins, the new starter at quarterback due to the injury of Damien Fleming, scored on a 3-yard run. Anthony Amos' 34-yard pass from Jeff Ziemba put the Rattlers up 14-7, but the Danger tied it again on Angelo Pease's 3-yard run. The Rattlers took the lead to end the first quarter on a 12-yard pass from Ziemba to Jamal Miles. That was the start of Arizona's run.
Thornton scored on a 6-yard run to start the second quarter, and Amos' 21-yard reception from Ziemba put the Rattlers up 35-14 with 7:37 remaining in the second quarter. Scroggins scored on a 4-yard run, only to be countered by Thornton's 4-yard touchdown run with 1:40 left in the half.
The Danger cut into the lead early in the third quarter when Scroggins found Eric Thomas for 43 yards. Darrell Monroe ran in from 2 yards to extend the Rattlers' lead. Scroggins rushed for a 1-yard run to end the quarter, cutting the Rattlers lead to 49-35 heading into the final stanza.
Sawyer Petre added to the lead with a 41-yard field goal halfway into the fourth. Pease's 14-yard catch from Scroggins made it a 10-point game with 5:42 left. Petre hit a 21-yard field goal to lift the Rattlers to a 55-42 advantage with just over a minute left in the game. Thomas scored on a 14-yard run for the Danger with 25 seconds remaining. The Rattlers recovered the onside kick, and Monroe scored on a 5-yard run to seal the game for the Rattlers.
It was an even game statistically. The Danger outgained the Rattlers in total yards, 296 to 241. The Danger had the edge in the passing game at 220 to 107 yards, while the Rattlers had the advantage on the ground, 134 to 76. The Danger were penalized 11 times for 72 yards, while the Rattlers were flagged 3 times for 35 yards.
Ziemba was 9 of 12 for 119 yards with 3 touchdowns. Thornton continued his two-game run with 86 yards on 15 carries to go with his 3 touchdowns. Monroe rushed 6 times for 23 yards and a pair of scores. Amos scored on both his receptions, amassing 55 yards in the process. Miles caught 4 balls for 26 yards and a touchdown. Ryan Langford's 6 total tackles and sack paced the Rattlers' defense. Joshua Gordon had a sack and an interception, while Justin Martin recorded a sack.
