SIOUX FALLS, SD - Darrell Monroe rushed for over 100 yards and four touchdowns as the Arizona Rattlers ran over the Sioux Falls Storm tonight, 48-40, at Denny Sanford Premiere Center.
With the win, the Rattlers improved to 5-1 on the Indoor Football League season, while the Storm fell to 4-2. The game was original scheduled for April 14, but was moved two days back due to inclement weather conditions in the Sioux Falls region.
Jamal Miles put the Rattlers on the board five-and-a-half minutes into the game with an eight-yard touchdown catch from Jeff Ziembia. The Storm came back with a 12-yard run from quarterback Lorenzo Brown. Lyle McCombs' 45 yard run put the Storm up 14-6 with 3:33 remaining in the opening quarter. The Rattlers pulled to within a point on Monroe's eight-yard run with nine seconds left in the quarter.
The Rattlers took the lead a third of the way into the second quarter when Ziemba found Dezmon Epps for a 32-yard touchdown. The Storm cut the Rattlers lead to 20-17 on Miles Bergner's 21-yard field goal. Ziembia's two-yard pass to Anthony Amos gave the Rattlers a 27-17 lead at the half.
Arizona poured it on in the third quarter, with Monroe scoring on runs of 16 and three yards. Mike Tatum's 33-yard touchdown catch from Brown pulled the Storm to within 41-23 by the end of the third quarter.
Monroe scored his fourth touchdown of the nighton a seven-yard run at the 14:40 mark of the fourth quarter, but Brown countered with an eight-yard run of his own. Tatum rushed it in from two yards out before Bergner drew the Storm to within eight points when he his a 33-yard field goal with 58 seconds remaining. However, the rally fell short as the Storm fell to the Rattlers by those eight points.
Monroe's 126 rushing yards are the most by any IFL player this season. The running back from Western Arizona College started the first two games of the season, but was in the shadows the past two games for the Rattlers in favor of Shadrach Thornton. The Rattlers placed Thornton on Short-Term Injured Reserve last week with an undisclosed injury, and Monroe was thrust back into the spotlight.
The Storm won the battle of total offense, 258 to 248 yards with an edge of 148 to 139 yards in the rushing game. It is the highest combined rushing total by two teams in the IFL in 2018. The Rattlers were flagged 10 times for 83 yards, while the Storm committed seven infractions for 42 yards. The Rattlers forced three Storm turnovers and Sioux Falls intercepted Ziemba once.
In addition to his 126 yards and 4 touchdowns, Monroe also caught 3 passes for 39 yards. Ziemba went 9 of 18 for 109 yards with 3 touchdowns and the aforementioned interception. Epps caught 3 passes for 63 yards and a score. Miles and Amos each caught touchdown passes for the Rattlers. Arkieth Browns' 8 total tackles and interception paced the Arizona defense. Nathan Lindsey had the other interception, and Edward Mosely recovered a fumble. Ryan Langford had 1.5 sacks for the Rattlers.
Lorenzo Brown struggled, completing just 7 of his 18 attempts for 122 yards with a touchdown and a pair of interceptions, while rushing 11 times for 41 yards and 2 scores. McCombs finished with 6 carries for 69 yards and a touchdown, and had 2 receptions for 22 yards. Tatum caught 4 passes for a game-high 92 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed 4 times for 26 yards and another touchdowns. Chris Martin tallied 7 total tackles, and Jabari Gorman registered an interception.
The Rattlers will host the Green Bay Blizzard on April 21 at 6:05 p.m. pacific (8:05 p.m. central). The Storm will be at home against the Cedar Rapids Titans on April 21 with kickoff set for 5:05 p.m. pacific (7:05 p.m. central).
