GRAND ISLAND, NE - Lorenzo Brown accounted for seven touchdowns as the Sioux Falls Storm put away the Nebraska Danger in week 10 of the Indoor Football League season, tonight at Eihusen Arena.
The 62-48 win improved the Storm's record to 6-2 on the season. The Danger fell to 4-4 with the loss.
The Storm wasted no time as the scored on the game's first offensive play on a 35-yard pass from Brown to Judd Harrold. Later in the first quarter, Sioux Falls went up by two touchdowns on Brown's one-yard run. Korey Ringer put the Danger on the board on the ensuing kickoff, which he returned 56 yards for the score. Brown found Mike Tatum on a bomb of 43 yards with 2:40 to go in the first quarter. The Storm led 21-7 at the end of the quarter.
Lyle McCombs extended the Storm's lead to 21 points on a 24-yard run three-and-a-half minutes into the second quarter. The Danger cut into the lead on Brad Hatfield's 33-yard field goal mid way into the quarter. Brown found Tatum for 29 yards on the Storm's next drive and Sioux Falls had its largest advantage of the game at 25 points, 35-10, with 5:44 left in the second. Nebraska showed some signs of life in the final minute of the half, scoring on Hatfield's 35-yard field goal with 54 seconds left, then on a nine-yard strike from Jesse Scroggins to Gregory Dent, Jr. with 14 seconds remaining in the half. Scroggins hit Kenzel Doe for the two-point conversion. Miles Bergner put the Storm up as time expired with a 33-yard field goal, and the Danger trailed 38-21 at intermission.
Scroggins and Angelo Pease scored on one-yard runs for the Danger and, suddenly, The Storm's lead was cut to just four points at 38-34 with 10:43 to go in the third. Brown ran it in from six yards to extend the lead to 11 points. On the Danger's next offensive play, Pease broke free for a 41-yard touchdown run. He capped that with two-point conversion run and the Danger were within three points at the 6:17 mark of the third quarter. Brown connected with Harrold for 21 yards and the Storm's lead was 10 at 52-32 heading into the final quarter.
Brown's third rushing touchdown of the game, a 14-yarder, was followed by Bergner's 45-yard field goal and gave the Storm some breathing room with a 62-42 lead six minutes into the fourth quarter. Scroggins hit Dent on a five-yard pass with 55 seconds to go. Scroggins' two-point conversion pass sailed high and the Storm maintained a 62-48 lead.
Bergner's 45-yard field goal in the fourth quarter tied his season high, and is the longest in the IFL this season. He was perfect on the night, hitting both of his field goal attempts and all eight of his extra point tries.
The Storm out gained the Danger in total offense, 299 yards to 161. They held advantages in the rushing game, 110 yards to 68, and in the passing game, 189 yard to 93. The Danger were penalized nine times for 76 yards, while the Danger were flagged seven times for 74 yards. There were three interceptions thrown in the game, two by the Storm and one by the Danger.
Brown was spectacular, going 10 of 16 for 189 yards with 4 touchdowns and an interception. He also rushed 11 times for 54 yards and 3 scores. McCombs finished with 9 rushes for 53 yards and a touchdown. Tatum and Harrold each had 3 receptions and 2 touchdowns, going for receiving yards of 81 and 66 yards, respectively. Chris Martin led the Storm defense with 5.5 total tackles and a sack. Jabari Gorman recorded an interception, while Dezmin Reed recorded a sack.
Scroggins completed 8 of 18 for 81 yards with 2 touchdowns. Pease rushed 13 times for 67 passes and a pair of touchdowns. Dent finished with 6 receptions for 45 yards and 2 touchdowns, and Eric Thomas has 3 catches for 34 yards. Darion Monroe paced the Danger with 8.5 total tackles. Najee Bright and Xzavie Jackson each had an interception of Storm quarterbacks.
Each team's backup quarterback, Dillon Turner for the Storm and Moses Skillon for the Danger, saw action in the game and each tossed an interception.
