FINAL - Blizzard 29, Steamwheelers 26
3/29/19 --
MOLINE IL - The Green Bay Blizzard scored 15 points in the final 55 seconds to rally over the Quad City Steamwheelers tonight at Taxslayer Center.
In a game racked with penalties, the difference turned out to be Kezlow Smith's touchdown catch from Lenorris Footman with 12 seconds to go which put the Blizzard up 29-26. The Blizzard improved to 3-2 on the season while the Steamwheelers fell to 2-3.
Quad City scored on their first drive as Carlos Wiggins plunged in from a yard out, but the point after was thwarted by a bad snap. It was the only score of the first quarter and put the Steamwheelers up 6-0.
After forcing a turnover on downs by the Blizzard, the Steamwheelers drove down and scored on a two-yard run from backup quarterback Dillon Turner. Kenneth Rowe's point after try was no good, and the lead was at 12-0 with 14 minutes left in the second quarter. Turner has been featured in the offense as a receiver as of late. Green Bay got on the board on a freak play, as the defense blocked a Steamwheelers field goal try which was recovered by Isaiah Brown who ran it in two yards for the touchdown. E.J. Hilliard found Quinton Pedroza for a six-yard touchdown to provide Quad City with a 20-7 halftime lead.
The Blizzard opened up the second half with a five-yard pass from Footman to pull Green Bay to within 20-14 with 10:37 left in the third quarter. Hilliard found Pedroza for seven yards at the end of the third quarter, but the extra point try was blocked by the Blizzard. Quad City lead 26-14 at the end of three quarters.
The game went scoreless for the first 14:05 of the fourth quarter before the Blizzard scored on a two-yard plunge to make the score 26-21. Green Bay attempted an onside kick, which was touched by Wiggins before it was recovered by Levi Copelin of the Blizzard with 53 seconds remaining. The Blizzard drove down the field in 41 seconds, culminating with Footman's two yard strike to Smith in the middle of the end zone.
Indicative of the final score, the teams were close in total offense with the Blizzard holding an edge of 153 yards to 141. Quad City had 82 rushing yards, while Green Bay had 108 yards through the air. The Blizzard were penalized 12 times for 88 yards and the Steamwheelers were flagged five times for 53 yards.
Footman was 12 of 24 for 108 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed 13 times for 33 yards. Keshaun Taylor caught a game-high six passes for 60 yards. Smith finished with three receptions for 32 yards to go along with his game winning touchdown, and Hill had a pair of grabs for 17 yards and a score. Powell had eight tackles while Silverberry Mouhon finished with seven. Brown's interception was his first of the season.
Hilliard finished eight of 17 for 59 yards with a touchdown and a pick, and rushed 11 times for 56 yards. Keyvan Rudd caught three passes for 29 yards, while both of Pedroza's receptions went for touchdowns. Danzel McDaniel was spectacular for the Quad City defense as he recorded 13 tackles. Robert Jones Tallied a pair of sacks.
