FINAL - Barnstormers 41, River Kings 20
3/30/19 --
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - Defense in the Indoor Football League typically can be a tricky thing. Then again, sometimes a defense can make all the difference.
The latter was the case tonight as the Iowa Barnstormers rode their defense to a 41-20 win over the Cedar Rapids River Kings tonight at U.S. Cellular Center. That would have looked even more impressive had it not been for a late touchdown by the River Kings.
Iowa moved to a perfect 4-0 on the season with the win. Cedar Rapids fell to 1-4. These teams will match up next Saturday in Des Moines.
Cedar Rapids got on the board first courtesy of 22-yard field goal from Henry Nell. Daquan Neal's six-yard scamper put the Barnstormers up 7-3; a score which held through the end of the opening quarter.
After Nathan Criswell's 35-yard field goal mid way through the second quarter put the Barnstormers up by a touchdown, the River Kings tied it at 10 piece on Kurt Palandech's eight-yard strike to Drake White. It was White's first touchdown in a Cedar Rapids uniform. A one-yard run from Neal put the Barnstormers up 17-10 with 6:16 remaining in the first half, and they never looked back.
Criswell hit another 35-yarder to double-up the score at 20-10 early in the third quarter, and the rout was on. Iowa scored once again in the third on Neal's third touchdown run of the night, of 13 yards. The Barnstormers led 27-10 heading into the fourth.
The River Kings narrowed that to two touchdowns when Henry Nell nailed a 21-yard field goal a minute-and-a-half into the quarter. Jamal Tyler provided some insurance with a one-yard run on Iowa's next possession, and they added even more on Neal's three-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Balentine with just under seven minutes to go. The River Kings scored on a one-yard run up the middle from Kalif Phillips with a second left, but it was too late as the Barnstormers emerged with the three-touchdown victory.
The overall series between the teams is now tied 6-6.
Iowa accumulated 188 yards of offense to Cedar Rapids' 177. The Barnstormers held a slight edge in the passing game, while the River Kins were slightly advantageous on the ground. Each team was penalized 10 times; the Barnstormers for 58 yards and the River Kings for 80 yards.
Neal was solid in the win, completing 14 of 17 passes for 124 yards and a touchdown, while rushing 12 times for 58 yards and three scores. Balentine has 10 catches for 90 hards to go with his touchdown grab. In his first-ever indoor football game, Treyvon Williams recorded 14 tackles. Desmon Raiford tallied two sacks and an interception for the Iowa defense. Criswell his all five of his point after tries and both of his field goal attempts.
Palandech struggled to get the offense going all night, finishing 13 of 23 for 105 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He also rushed 10 times for 50 yards. Nathaniel Chavious had 31 rushing yards off seven carries. White and Jordan Smith each caught four passes. Smith had 35 yards receiving, while White had 31 yards and a touchdown grab. Nick Brassell recorded nine tackles, while Damante Horton added eight.
These teams are back at it in week 7 with the River Kings visiting the Barnstormers on April 6. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. pacific (7:05 p.m. central).
