FINAL - Danger 50, Bucks 35
3/30/19 --
BISMARCK, ND - The Bismarck Bucks kept it close through three-and-a-half quarters, but they ran into just too much danger.
That would be the Nebraska Danger, who held off the pesky Bucks, 50-35, at the Bismarck Events Center tonight to earn their second win of the season. the Danger improved to 2-3 with the win, while the Bucks fell to 0-4. Nebraska defeated Bismark on opening weekend in Grand Island, 66-44.
It was a defensive slug fest in the first half, with Blake Levin giving the Bucks a 3-0 lead on an 17-yard field goal on their second possession of the game. The Danger came back with a 30-yard run from Quincy Walden to go up 7-3.
Levin struck again; this time from 20 yards to pull the Danger to within a point. Nebraska increased its lead to a touchdown when Tommy Armstrong, Jr. found Eric Thomas across the middle for the score. At first it appeared that Thomas did not have possession of the ball but, after review, the call was changed to a touchdown catch. On the first play of the ensuing possession, the Bucks drew even when Homer Causey tossed a 40-yard bomb to an open Brandynn Clark. The game was deadlocked at 13-13 with 53 seconds remaining. However, Nebraska came back in a hurry, scoring on a 30-yard run from Armstrong. The Bucks added a 27-yard field goal from Levin as time expired to cut the Danger lead to 19-16 heading into intermission.
Armstrong found Travis McCombs in the right side of the end zone for a 10-yard score at the 8:11 mark of the third quarter to put the Danger up by 10. But the Bucks struck back with a four-yard pass from Causey to Diante Thomas and Bismarck was back to within three points late in the third. The lead would be short-lived, however, as on the ensuing kickoff, Weldon slashed his way 50 yards into the end zone. The Bucks lead was back to 10 at 33-23 with just under two minutes to go in the third quarter.
Bismarck had no plans of going away, as it scored on a four-yard run from Mike Tatum. Levin's point after try was blocked, leaving the Bucks with a 33-29 deficit. The Danger went up by 11 with 14:11 left in regulations on Armstrong's four-yard run. The Bucks made a dent into that on a one-yard touchdown run from Causey, but he was tackled short as he attempted to rush in for the two-point conversion. The Danger held a 40-35 lead with just over eight minutes left. They added a 19-yard field goal from Reynolds. Armstrong responded, rushing around the left side 46 yards for the touchdown, which proved to be the icing on the cake and would prove to make for the final tally.
The Danger had a narrow advantage in total offense, 247 yards to 242, with a 191 yards to 84 in the rushing game. That left the Buck with a 158 yards to 56 through the air. The Bucks were penalized seven times for 88 yards and the Danger were flagged six times for 77 yards.
Armstrong completed seven of 12 passes for 56 yards with two touchdowns. Where he made his mark was in the rushing game, where he ran for a league season-high 106 yards with three touchdowns. Davonte Sapp-Lynch has a seemingly quiet 60 yards off nine carries. Eric Thomas finished with five catches for 34 yards and a touchdown. The Danger defense was led by six total tackles each from Robert Haynes and Chris Martin. Martin, D'Vonn Brown and Phillip Williamson each recorded a sack.
Causey finished 10 of 19 for 136 yards and two touchdowns while rushing 17 times for 42 yards and a score. Mike Tatum rushed twice for 20 yards and a touchdown, while catching three balls for 35 yards. Brandynn Clark had three receptions for 72 yards and a touchdown. Paul Dodson had five tackles and LaTreze Mushatt recorded a sack.
