TUCSON, AZ - At least for a night, The Boneyard was impervious to attacks from the sky.
The Tucson Sugar Skulls jumped out to a 24-14 halftime lead and never looked back as they were able to hold off the San Diego Strike Force tonight, 51-31, at the Tucson Events Center.
Tucson moves to 3-1 with the win, while San Diego fell to 0-5 with the loss. This was the second meeting, Expansion Bowl II, between the teams this season. The Sugar Skulls won the first meeting, 65-44, on March 3 in San Diego.
The Sugar Skulls scored on their first possession on a 45-yard field goal from Diego Marquez. The Strike Force took an early 7-3 led when Derrick Bernard rushed in from five yards out. Mike Jones' 14-yard run to the end zone put Tucson up by three, but the Strike Force struck back when Bernard found Julian Stafford for 29 yards. San Diego led 14-10 after one quarter of play.
Jones' rush from two yards put the Sugar Skulls up 17-14 midway through the second quarter and a run by kicker Diego Martinez of four yards extended their lead to 24-14, which would last into intermission.
Ernesto Lacayo's 18-yard field goal pulled San Diego to within a touchdown at the 8:15 mark of the third quarter, but Tucson came right back, scoring on one-yard run from quarterback Jake Medlock. Bernard found Marques Rodgers for a 23 yard score to once again pull the Strike Force to within seven. Jones' nine-yard touchdown from Medlock made the score 38-24 at the end of the third quarter.
Bernard rushed for a one-yard touchdown with 13:34 remaining in the game to make the score 38-31. Tucson would then ice the game with a pair of touchdowns; a one-yard run from Medlock and a 14-yard pass from the quarterback to Brandon Sampson.
The Sugar Skulls held a slight edge in total offense, 326 yards to 231. The Strike Force held an edge in the passing game, while the Sugar Skulls' advantage came on the ground. Tucson was penalized 10 times for 94 yards and San Diego was flagged seven times for 89 yards.
Medlock went 13 of 22 for 148 with two touchdown passes and a pair of touchdown runs. Jones finished with 12 carries for 78 yards and a pair of touchdowns, as well as a receiving touchdown. Jarid Brown had four catches for 59 yards, and Sampson finished with four grabs for 45 yards and a touchdown. Nigel Bethel II led the Sugar Skulls with seven total tackles. Zach Allen had an interception and a sack. Cam Gaddis recorded an interception and Keith Jones, Jr. and Michael Kluge also tallied sacks.
Bernard completed 14 of 29 passes for 183 yards with two touchdowns and two picks. He also rushed for 26 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Stafford had 72 yard off four receptions with a touchdown, and David Carter hauled in four passes for 46 yards. Omar Cook led the way for the Strike Force defense with 6.5 total tackles, and three players had tackles for losses.
The Strike Force will visit the Arizona Rattlers on April 6 with kickoff scheduled for 5:05 p.m. pacific (7:05 p.m. central). The Sugar Skulls will travel to Nebraska for their first ever meeting with the Danger. Kickoff in that one is set for 5:05 p.m. pacific (7:05 p.m. central).
