FINAL - Barnstormers 59, River Kings 48

DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Barnstormers scored the final 13 points as they rallied late in the fourth quarter to down the Cedar Rapids River Kings, 59-48, tonight at Wells Fargo Arena.
The game was closely contested throughout, as neither team held a lead of more than 11 points. With the win, the Barnstormers remain perfect on the 2019 Indoor Football League season. They share an identical 5-0 record with the Arizona Rattlers, who struck down the San Diego Strike Force tonight, 91-58. The River Kings, who had their best showing since week 3, fall to 1-5 on the season.
Kurt Palandech found Drake White for a 27-yard touchdown to put Cedar Rapids on the board less than two minutes left in the game. Iowa responded with a 39-yard run from Jamal Tyler to knot the score at 7-7 with 11:09 remaining in the opening quarter. Palandech found White again; this time for 17 yards to put the River Kings back up by a touchdown. Tyler struck again on a run of four yards. The teams were tied 14-14 after the opening quarter.
Daquan Neal rushed in from a yard out to give the Barnstormers their first lead of the game at 20-14 at the 9:36 mark of the second quarter. Cedar Rapids responded with a 17-yard touchdown run from Nathaniel Chavious. Raheem Harvey's 11-yard touchdown run gave the Barnstormers a 26-20 lead with 4:33 left in the first half. That score would stand through the break.
Palandech scored from two yards out to put Cedar Rapids back up by a point before Neal's eight-yard rush gave the Barnstormers a 33-27 lead midway through the third quarter. The advantage would not last long as Marquel Wade returned the ensuing kickoff 48 yards for a score. The River Kings got the ball back and scored on a six-yard run from Chavious. Jazeric Peterson's 29-yard touchdown catch from Neal drew Iowa to within a point at 41-40 by the end of the third.
Neal scampered 34 yards to the end zone which gave the Barnstormers the lead at 46-41 with 8:48 remaining in the final quarter. Wade then returned the Barnstormers' onside kick 10 yards for a touchdown and the River Kings were back up by two. From there, it was all Barnstormers. Tyler's 26-yard touchdown put Iowa up by four, and Neal hit Ryan Balentine on a nine-yard scoring strike. Balentine added a point on the following kickoff by adding a rouge to account for the final score.
The Barnstormers racked up 293 yards of total offense compared to the River Kings' 256. The difference came on the ground, where Iowa amassed 153 yards and the River Kings finished with 102. Cedar Rapids was penalized 10 times for 62 yards, while Iowa was flagged seven times for 54 yards.
Neal finished 13 of 18 for 143 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. He also rushed nine times for 70 yards and three scores. Tyler gained 76 yards on five carries and three touchdowns on the ground. Peterson finished with three catches for 77 yards and a score, and Balentine had five receptions for 46 yards and a touchdown. Jourdan Wickliffe had a monster night with 16 tackles, two tackles for loss and a pass break up to lead the Barnstormers' defense. Tevin Madison and Tyrell Pearson each recorded an interception in the effort.
Palandech completed 14 of 23 passes for 154 yards with two touchdowns and a pair of picks. He rushed for 31 yards and score. Chavious was solid, gaining 65 yards off eight carries with two trips to the end zone. In addition to his two kickoffs returned for touchdowns, Wade caught four balls for 51 yards, while White had three grabs for 50 yards and two scores. Malik Slater led the way for the River Kings defense with eight tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, a sack and a pass break up. Nick Brassell had an interception and Jeff Branch recorded a sack.
The Barnstormers will visit the Bismarck Bucks on April 14 with kickoff slated for 12:05 p.m. pacific (2:05 p.m. central). It will be the first-ever meeting between the teams. The River Kings will head cross-country to face the San Diego Strike Force on April 14. Kickoff in that one is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. pacific (5:05 p.m. central). Cedar Rapids defeated the Strike Force 65-48 in week 3 in Cedar Rapids.
