FINAL - Danger 53, Sugar Skulls 47

GRAND ISLAND, NE - The Nebraska Danger scored 21 straight points in the second and third quarters, and held on to defeat the visiting Tucson Sugar Skulls, 53-47, tonight at Eilhusen Arena at the Heartland Events Center.
With the win, Nebraska evened it's season record at 3-3, while the expansion Sugar Skulls, fell to 3-1. It was the first-ever meeting between the teams.
The opening quarter started out seemingly slow. Matt Behrendt's nine-yard run put Tucson up 6-0 with 10:44 left in the quarter. The Danger cut that in half on Jeremy Reynolds' 27-yard field goal. The Sugar Skulls held a 6-3 lead at the end of the first.
A five-yard run from former Nebraska Cornhusker Tommy Armstrong, Jr. gave the Danger a 10-6 lead just over three minutes into the second, but the Sugar Skulls came back on Behrendt's 19-yard scoring strike to Rashad Canty. Armstrong found Eric Thomas for 29 yards to put the Danger back up by three at 10-3 with eight minutes left in the first half. Mike Jones scored the first of his three rushing touchdowns on the night from three yards out and Tucson was up by four with just under six minutes remaining in the half. The Danger took what would end up being a 23-20 halftime lead on Davonte Sapp-Lynch's seven-yard run with 15 seconds remaining in the half.
Thomas returned the opening kickoff of the second half back for 51 yards to put Nebraska up 30-20. They extended that lead to 37-20 on Thomas' 14-yard touchdown catch from Armstrong. The Sugar Skulls came back in the quarter, scoring on a pair of touchdown runs from Jones of seven and four yards to draw his team to within four points at 37-33 at the 4:55 mark of the third quarter. Reynolds' 38-yard field goal extended the lead to 40-33 with just under two minutes to go in the quarter. That would remain the score heading into the final period.
Armstrong hit Thomas for a nine-yard touchdown and the Danger were up by 13 with 13:06 left in the final quarter. It took jut one play for Tucson to score as Jake Medlock hit Bandon Sampson for a 25-yard touchdown. Armstrong' 13-yard coring pass to Quincy Walden put Nebraska back up by 13 midway through the quarter. Medlock's one-yard run pulled the Sugar Skulls to within 53-47 with 3:57 to go, but they were unable to make up the rest of the deficit as the Danger held on by that margin for the win.
The Danger totaled 305 yards of total offense to 254 for the Sugar Skulls, including an advantage of 111 yards to 72 in the rushing game. Tucson was flagged eight times for 56 yards, while Nebraska was penalized just four times for 24 yards. The Danger defense forced four turnovers; three interceptions and a fumble recovery.
Armstrong went 14 of 25 for 196 yards with four touchdowns and an interception. He also rushed for a game-high 86 yards on 16 carries with a score. Thomas was stellar, adding six catches for 104 yards and three touchdowns to his kickoff returned for a score. Steffon Herd led the way for the Danger defense with nine tackles, while Brandon Roe picked off Tucson quarterbacks three times. The three interceptions are the most by any IFL player in a single game this season.
Medlock finished seven of 10 for 100 yards and a touchdown, while Behrendt went seven of 13 for 82 yards with a touchdown and a pair of interceptions. the latter rushed nine times for 45 yards and a score. Jones rushed only five times for 18 yards, but had three touchdowns on the ground to show for his efforts. He also caught four passes for 47 yards. Sampson totaled five receptions for 59 yards and a score, while Canty finished with 48 yards off three grabs with a touchdown. Zach Allen's nine tackles paced the Sugar Skulls defense. Kenneth James had a pick and Shakore Phillip recorded a sack.
Next up for the Danger is a visit to Green Bay to face the Blizzard. Kickoff for that April 13 match up is set for 5:05 p.m. pacific (7:05 p.m. central). The Blizzard edged the Danger 53-52 at home in week 2. The Sugar Skulls will host the Arizona Rattlers on April 14 with kickoff scheduled for 3 p.m. pacific (5 p.m. central). The Rattlers took down the Sugar Skulls 63-28 in week 4 in Phoenix.
