BISMARCK, ND - The Iowa Barnstormers rushed out to a 34-0 second quarter lead and coasted to a 55-16 win over the host Bismarck Bucks tonight at Bismarck Event Center.
With the win, the Barnstormers improved to a perfect 6-0 on the season, while the Bucks fell to 0-6 in their Indoor Football League tenure. It was the first-ever meeting between the teams, and the first of two match ups between them this season. They face off again in week 14 as Bismarck heads to Des Moines on May 24.
Iowa started things off with a touchdown on their first possession, with Daquan Neal hitting Ryan Balentine for a five-yard score on their opening drive. They added to that with a two-yard pass from Neal to Raheem Harvey with 6:11 to go in the opening quarter. The Barnstormers went up 20-0 a minute-and-a-half later on Harvey's 30-yard pass from Neal.
In the second quarter, the Barnstormers scored on a four-yard run by Neal with just over give minutes remaining. They took their 34-0 lead with 13 seconds left in the first half when Neal found Ryan Balentine for a five-yard touchdown. The Bucks got on the board on Blake Levin's 33-yard field goal as time expire in the first half, giving Iowa a 34-3 lead at the break.
The Barnstormers weren't done, as they scored on a 23-yard run by Malik Brown early in the third quarter. The Bucks then scored defensively when Antwan Smith recovered an Iowa fumble and returned it five yards for a touchdown. The Barnstormers led 41-10 at the end of three.
A pair of eight-yard touchdown passes from Neal to Balentine in the fourth quarter; one at 11:51 and the other at 2:34, put the Barnstormers up 55-10. The Bucks added a touchdown late in the quarter on a one-yard run from Preston Hamlette.
The Barnstormers accumulated 290 yards in total offense to 116 for the Bucks. Iowa had 155 yards passing and 135 yards on the ground. Bismarck tallied 58 yards in each the rushing and passing games. Iowa was penalized seven times for 39 yards while Bismarck was flagged six times for 32 yards.
Neal went 13 of 25 for 147 yards with five touchdowns and an interception. He also scored a rushing touchdown. Brown finished with 14 rushes for 103 yards and a score. Balentine, the league's active leader in receiving yards, caught eight passes for 43 yards and four touchdowns. Harvey had three grabs for 53 yards and a pair of scores. Treyvon Williams had nine tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss. Tyrell Pearson picked off two passes and Jonah McCutcheon had an interception, while Travonte Valentine recorded 1.5 sacks.
Homer Causey completed four of 13 passes for 58 yards, but was picked off three times. John Gibbs gained 30 yards off nine carries. Brandynn Clark and Frederick Abraham caught single passes for 18 and 17 yards, respectively. Smith had seven sacks, a fumble recovery and an interception for the Bucks' defense.
The Bucks head to Cedar Rapids on April 20 with kickoff scheduled for 4:05 p.m. pacific (6:05 p.m. central). The Barnstormers have a United Bowl rematch with the Sioux Falls Storm on April 20. Kickoff in that one is slated for 5:05 p.m. pacific (7:05 central).
