SAN DIEGO, CA - The Indoor Football League can no longer count the San Diego Strike Force among its winless ranks.
San Diego took a 34-21 halftime lead, then held off the Cedar Rapids River Kings to win the first game in franchise history tonight at Pechanga Arena San Diego. The Strike Force are one of two expansion teams competing in their inaugural IFL seasons (the Tucson Sugar Skulls are the other). After dropping their first six games, San Diego earned its first win in front of its home crowd.
The Strike Force stand at 1-6 through the first half of the IFL season, while the River Kings dropped to an identical 1-6 record. This was the second of two meetings between the teams. The River Kings bested the Strike Force, 65-48, on March 9 in Cedar Rapids. The teams are both headed by the same ownership group, led by California businessman Roy Choi.
The Strike Force struck first on a 22-yard pass from Jiha Vercher to Marques Rogers, but the River Kings responded with a one-yard run from Nathaniel Chavious. Rodgers scored on a six-yard run with just under five minutes in the opening quarter to give San Diego a 13-7 lead. Cedar Rapids went up by a point at 14-13 with under a minute to co in the quarter.
Vercher's 10-yard run put San Diego back on top four minutes into the second quarter, but the River Kings came back on a 22-yard touchdown pass from Kurt Palandech to Jordan Smith. San Diego reeled off 20 straight points in the second and third quarters, the first being on a 13-yard run from George Moreira, Jr. Vercher hit David Carter on a 45-yard bomb as time expired to put the Strike Force up by 13 at the half.
The only scoring in the third quarter came on a pair of field goals from San Diego's Ernesto Lacayo of 50 and 43 yards. The Strike Force lead was 40-21 with three minutes remaining in the quarter. Chavious rushed for a one-yard score with four seconds left in the quarter to cut the Strike Force's lead to 40-27 heading into the fourth.
Cedar Rapids cut the deficit to six points when he returned a missed field goal 40 yards for a touchdown, accounting for the final of 40-34.
San Diego held a slight edge in total offense, 218 yards to 204. That included a 104 yards to 70 advantage in the rushing game. The River Kings were flagged five times for 25 yards and the Strike Force were penalized four times for 32 yards. The Strike Force converted both of their fourth down conversion attempts in the game.
Vercher got the start in place of Derrick Bernard and was efficient. He completed 12 of 19 passes for 114 yards with two passing touchdowns and had a rushing score. Moreira gained 58 yards off 18 carries with a trip to the end zone. In addition to his rushing touchdown, Rodgers caught six passes for 43 yards and a touchdown through the air. Omar Cook, Seshawn Hathorn and E.J. Johnson each recorded six tackles for the Strike Force. Hathorn forced and recovered a fumble.
Palandech completed 11 of 15 passes for 134 yards with a touchdown. Chavious had three rushing scores while gaining 24 yards on 10 carries. Smith finished with five receptions for 59 yards and a score. Damante Horton tallied nine tackles, while Kevon Perry had eight and a sack. Eric Banford broke up two passes.
The River Kings are at home to host the winless Bismarck Bucks on April 20 with kickoff scheduled for 4:05 p.m. pacific (6:05 p.m. central). It's the first-ever meeting between the teams. The Strike Force will host the undefeated Arizona Rattlers on April 22 in an IFL special Monday Night Football edition. It's the second meeting of the season between the teams. The Rattlers ran away with a 91-58 win over San Diego on April 6.
The teams meet again next week for the third and final time this season. They will be in Grand Island as the Danger host the Blizzard on April 20 with kickoff scheduled for for 5:05 p.m. pacific (7:05 p.m. central).
