FINAL - Storm 36, Barnstormers 32
4/20/19 --
SIOUX FALLS, SD - One of the two last unbeaten Indoor Football League teams has fallen.
Kent Shelby's 10-yard touchdown catch from Lorenzo Brown, Jr. with a second remaining was enough to rally the Sioux Falls Storm past the previously undefeated Iowa Barnstormers, 36-32 tonight at Denny Sanford Premiere Center. Each team now stands at 6-1 on the season; behind the Arizona Rattlers, who are a perfect 6-0. The Rattlers travel to California to face the expansion San Diego Strike Force Monday night.
The Barnstormers defeated the Storm, 42-38, in last season's IFL United Bowl in Des Moines. This was the first of a pair of meetings between them, as they will meet on June 8 during the second-to-last week of the season. Six of the league's 10 teams qualify for the playoffs, with the top two seeds earning byes in the first round, and home field advantage in the conference finals.
Brown put the Storm on the board first with a one-yard run on their opening drive. Daquan Neal's three-yard pass to Raheem Harvey gave the Barnstormers a 7-6 lead seven-and-a-half minutes later. That was the margin after one quarter.
Neal scored on a 14-yard run for the Barnstormers before Calen Campbell countered with a five-yard run of his own to make the score 14-12 in favor of Iowa with nine minutes left in the second quarter. Iowa scored on the ensuing kickoff which he returned 50 yards for the touchdown. Wide receiver Brandon Shepherd drew Sioux Falls to within one at the 3:31 mark of the second. They took a 22-20 halftime lead on Parker Douglass' 37-yard field goal as time expired.
The only scoring in the third quarter came with 38 seconds left when Neal found Ryan Balentine for a nine-yard touchdown, and the Barnstormers were back in the lead at 26-22.
Brown's 27-yard touchdown pass to Sheperd put the Storm up by three early in the fourth quarter. Iowa responded with an eight-yard run from Jamal Tyler with nine minutes to go in the quarter. Tyler's six-yard rush was the deciding touchdown in the Barnstormers' United Bowl victory last July. With the Barnstormers up by three, Brown went to work driving down the field where he hit Shelby for the game winner with a second remaining.
Iowa tallied 228 yards of total offense to 173 for Sioux Falls. That included a 70-yard edge in the passing game. The Barnstormers were flagged nine times for 51 yards, and the Storm were penalized four times for 48 yards. Turnovers were a key, as the Barnstormers turned the ball over three times and the Storm had no such miscues.
Kicking was an issue for both teams as Dalton Hall hit just two of five of his extra point attempts and did not attempt a field goal. Parker Douglass, filling in for the injured Miles Bergner, was three of five on extra point tries, but converted on one of two field goal attempts for 37 yards.
Brown was nine of 20 for 81 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. He rushed 14 times for 61 yards with a trip to the end zone. Sheperd added to catches for 32 yards and a touchdown, while Shelby added 18 yards off two grabs for his game winner. Tre Dickerson and Rick Rumph each totaled seven tackles for the Storm defense, while Claude Davis recorded a sack.
Neal finished 19 of 28 for 157 yards with two touchdown tosses, while rushing seven times for 42 yards and a score. Tyler had 33 yards off eight carries and a touchdown. Balentine, the IFL active leader in receiving yards, caught six balls for 66 yards and a score. Jourdan Wickliffe recorded nine tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss, and Tyrell Pearson had an interception for the Iowa defense.
The Barnstormers are back on the road next week as they visit the expansion Tucson Sugar Skulls on April 27 at 6 p.m. pacific (8 p.m. central). It will be the first-ever meeting between the teams. The Storm will host the Arizona Rattlers on April 27 at 5:05 p.m. pacific (7:05 p.m. central). The Rattlers defeated the Storm 58-40 on March 31 in Phoenix.
