FINAL - Danger 47, Blizzard 40
4/20/19 --
GRAND ISLAND, NE - There will be no sweep of the Nebraska Danger by the Green Bay Blizzard this season.
The Danger made sure of that as they held off the Blizzard, 47-40, in a back-and-forth battle tonight at Eilhusen Arena at the Heartland Events Center. With the win, the Danger moved to 4-4 and position themselves for a playoff push during the second half of the season. The Blizzard, who had won four straight, fall to 5-3 on the season, and remain in fourth place in the IFL standings. Six of the 10 league teams qualify for the playoffs.
Green Bay won the first two meetings between the teams this season; both by last-minute scores. The Blizzard skipped past the Danger 53-52 on March 1, and won last week, 53-47. This was the second of a back-to-back between them and the last of three meetings.
Davonte Sapp-Lynch put Nebraska on the board first with a nine-yard run, but Lenorris Footman drew Green Bay even at 6-6 on a 13-yard pass to Kezlow Smith. The score was knotted at the end of the opening quarter.
The Blizzard took a 13-6 lead at the 10:13 mark of the second quarter on Keshaun Taylor's two-yard run. Nebraska's Tommy Armstrong, Jr. scored on a pair of runs; of seven and three yards late in the second quarter to lift Nebraska to a 18-13 lead by halftime.
Green Bay came back on their first possession of the third quarter with a four-yard pass from Footman to B.J. Hill, already an IFL Hall of Famer. Nebraska responded on a one-yard pass from Armstrong to Gregory Dent, Jr. and the Danger were up 25-20 midway through the quarter. Taylor's 15 yard touchdown catch from Footman gave the Blizzard a two-point lead with 2:46 left in the third, but the Danger re-took the lead when Armstrong found Quincy Walden short across the middle and Walden scampered for the 30-yard touchdown. Nebraska held a 32-27 advantage heading into the fourth.
Rameses Owens' two-yard run put the Blizzard up by a point. Once again, the Danger extended assumed the lead when Armstrong found Dent for a 10-yard touchdown pass. Owens scored his second touchdown of the quarter; this time from two yards out and the Blizzard were up 40-39 with 1:18 remaining. Nebraska scored what would be the winning touchdown on a 30-yard pass from Armstrong to Dent.
Nebraska accumulated 276 yards of total offense to Green Bay's 248. The difference came primarily in the passing game with a 18-yard edge. The Blizzard were penalized 10 times for 56 yards, while the Danger were flagged eight times for 48 yards.
Armstrong had his strongest game in several weeks, going 13 of 16 for 163 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. He also rushed 13 times for 82 yards and a pair of scores. Dent finished with five receptions for 50 yards and three touchdowns, and Walden added four grabs for 53 yards and a score. Robert Haynes paced the defense with eight tackles. Chris Martin recorded two sacks, and Seyvon Lowry added 1.5. Brandon Roe had an interception for the Nebraska defense.
