FINAL - Rattlers 52, Strike Force 14

SAN DIEGO, CA - The Arizona Rattlers scored 45 straight points in the final 39 minutes as they came away with a 52-14 win over the San Diego Strike Force tonight at Pechanga Arena.
The Rattlers were given a strong boost by recently signed Roland Genesy, Jr., who was making his IFL debut. Genesy rushed for 75 yards and three touchdowns in the win. Arizona moves to 7-0. The only remaining undefeated IFL team, they are atop the league standings with a one-game lead over the Sioux Falls Storm and Iowa Barnstormers, who each stand at 6-1. The Rattlers visit the Storm next week.
San Diego fell to 1-7 on the season and have a bye next week.
Arizona scored a franchise high in points in the teams' first meeting, a 91-58 Rattlers in Phoenix on April 6. They meet twice more this season; May 19 in San Diego and June 15, the final week of the regular season.
After forcing a turnover on downs from the Strike Force, the Rattlers scored on a 29-yard bomb from Jeff Ziemba. San Diego struck back on a one-yard run from Marques Rodgers to cap an eight-play drive. Ernesto Lacayo's kick was blocked giving the Rattlers a 7-6 lead which would last through the end of the first quarter.
Jihad Vercher's 10-yard pass to Victor Dean, Jr. gave the Strike Force their first lead of the game. Vercher hit Rodgers for the two-point conversion to put them up 14-7 with 10:40 left in the second quarter. The Rattlers tied it up two minutes later with a four-yard run from Roland Genesy, Jr. Arizona took the lead with 2:16 left in the quarter on a 18-yard scamper from Genesy. The Strike Force drove deep into Rattlers territory, but turned the ball over on downs. Arizona closed out the quarter on a 22-yard field goal from Jimmy Camacho. The Rattlers led 24-14 at the break.
The Rattlers took the opening kickoff of the second half, drove down and scored on Genesy's one-yard run. The point after attempt by Camacho was blocked, leaving the Rattlers with a 30-14 lead at the 11:32 point of the third quarter. On San Diego's first play from scrimmage, the snap to Vercher went over his head. In an attempt to run down the ball, Vercher was forced to kick the ball out of the end zone, resulting in a safety for Arizona. The Rattlers led 32-14 heading into the fourth quarter.
Backup quarterback Caleb Holbrook entered the game at the beginning of the fourth quarter, scoring on a one-yard run on his first drive. Four minutes later, Rattlers DB Dillon Winfrey intercepted Vercher and zig-zagged his way through the Strike Force for a 30-yard touchdown. Jarrod Harrington's two-point conversion run gave the Rattlers a 46-14 lead with 6:57 left in the fourth. Arizona added a score on Holbrook's seven-yard pass to Harrington with 55 seconds to play.
The Rattlers more than doubled the Strike Force in total offense, 295 yards to 136. That included a 69-yard edge in passing and 90-yard edge in rushing. The Strike Force managed just nine net rushing yards in the contest. Arizona was penalized seven times for 69 yards, while San Diego was flagged seven times for 47 yards. The Rattlers' defense forced four Strike Force turnovers.
Ziemba finished 11 of 20 for 152 yards and a touchdown. Genesy's 75 rushing yards came off of a dozen carries. He also caught a pair of passes for 31 yards. Harrington finished with seven catches for 95 yards and a touchdown, and Augustine added two receptions for 45 yards and a score. Winfrey recorded two interceptions to go along with nine tackles. Davontae Merriweather also had nine tackles. Ricky Wyatt, Jr. recorded 1.5 sacks and Allen Chapman had an interception for the Rattlers' defense.
Vercher, making his second start, completed 15 of 30 passes for 127 yards with a touchdown and three picks. All three of his interceptions came while he was attempting to cut into the Rattlers' lead in the second half. Marques Rodgers caught eight passes for 74 yards. Tyler Thornton tallied a game-high 16 tackles, and Terrence Fullum blocked two kicks.
The Rattlers will visit the Sioux Falls Storm on April 27 with kickoff set for 5:05 p.m. pacific (7:05 p.m. central). The Rattlers defeated the Storm 58-40 on March 31 in Phoenix. The Strike Force have a bye next week before returning to action on May 4 as they visit their fellow expansion Tucson Sugar Skulls. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. pacific (8 p.m. central). The Sugar Skulls have defeated the Strike Force in their two previous meetings this season; 65-44 on March 3 in San Diego and 51-31 on March 31 in Tucson.
